As of July 16, 2024, RWTH Aachen University is offering the new RWTHgpt service. The service is operated by the IT Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning Services (CLS). Until now, RWTHgpt was only available to employees of the authorized institutions. After the successful completion of the introductory phase, access is now also available to students of RWTH Aachen University. In this article, we will inform you about the most important changes.
RWTHgpt or ChatGPT?
ChatGPT or RWTHgpt are text-based dialogue systems or chatbots that use prompts to generate human-like responses.
The abbreviation “GPT” stands for “Generative pre-trained transformers”. These are AI models that generate human-like content and text (images, music, etc.) using previously trained large language models.
Both RWTHgpt and ChatGPT use the same technology Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. However, in contrast to ChatGPT, the servers used by RWTHgpt are located in Europe: Furthermore, the content of chats conducted with RWTHgpt is not used to train the AI or to optimize other services. Your chats are stored locally on the servers of the IT Center. This allows RWTHgpt to prompt in a more privacy-compliant way than ChatGPT. RWTHgpt is available for free to members of the RWTH and offers two models “GPT-4o” and “GPT-4o mini” with different token volumes.
Are There Any Special Considerations for Students?
Students of RWTH Aachen University can log in via the RWTH Single Sign-On in the same way as employees of authorised institutions. The system is accessed via the RWTHgpt web interface developed at RWTH Aachen University. In contrast to employees, students do not need a special role to use RWTHgpt – they can simply follow the prompts.
The use of RWTHgpt is now free of charge for students, but there are restrictions for the use of GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini:
- GPT-4o: 6,000 tokens per week
- GPT-4o-mini: 25,000 tokens per week
The token volume provided is equivalent to the text volume of approximately one master’s thesis and two term papers.
RWTHgpt Update Log
Do you want to stay informed about RWTHgpt updates? In our documentation portal IT Center Help, you will find the RWTHgpt Update Log, which informs you about the latest features and updates such as improvements and bug fixes to the service. Since August 26, 2024, it is now possible, among other things, to actively analyze the content of uploaded images, copy output prompts to the clipboard and render (mathematical) formulas, e.g. for the LaTeX software.
Further Information
See the IT Center Help for instructions on the functions of RWTHgpt.
On the RWTHgpt project website of the CLS, you can learn more about the new AI system, legal issues, terms of use, and information about the sustainability of generative AI systems.
If you have any questions about using the service, please feel free to email the IT-ServiceDesk. We also welcome your feedback and suggestions.
