Digital technologies have become an integral part of our daily lives – whether in academia, research, or the workplace. However, not everyone is able to use digital services equally. This is precisely where the issue of digital accessibility comes into play. An important occasion to raise awareness of this issue is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), which takes place this year on May 21, 2026.

What Does Digital Accessibility Mean?

Digital accessibility means that websites, applications, and digital content are designed so that they can be used by everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive limitations. This includes, for example:

  • Comprehensible and clearly structured content
  • Sufficient color contrast
  • Alternative text for images
  • Captions for videos
  • Usability without a mouse (for example, via keyboard)

The goal is to design digital offerings so that they are accessible and usable by as many people as possible. More than one billion people worldwide live with disabilities, and for them, accessibility is not an extra feature, but a prerequisite for participation.

Why Is Accessibility Important?

Accessibility is more than a technical issue; it is a matter of inclusion and equal opportunity. It plays a central role, especially in the higher education context:

  • Students should have access to learning materials regardless of any limitations
  • Faculty should be able to design content to be as inclusive as possible
  • Staff should be able to use digital tools without barriers

At the same time, all users benefit from accessible offerings: clear structures, good readability, and intuitive operation improve overall user-friendliness.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

Global Accessibility Awareness Day takes place every year on the third Thursday in May. It was established to raise global awareness of digital accessibility. The goal of this day of action is to encourage people to think about, discuss, and learn about digital accessibility.

In 2026, numerous universities and organizations will once again participate with activities and events. In North Rhine-Westphalia, GAAD is jointly organized by the digital accessibility competence centers Barrierefreiheit.nrw, ILIAS.nrw, and Moodle.NRW.

Workshops and Events

A diverse program of workshops will be offered around GAAD 2026. The events are aimed at staff, faculty, and interested individuals and offer both introductory opportunities and in-depth content.

Examples of topics include:

  • Fundamentals of digital accessibility
  • Accessible design of websites and documents
  • Legal framework (e.g., EU directives, BITV)
  • Use of tools for accessibility testing
  • Practical exercises for implementation in everyday work

The workshops are designed not only to raise awareness but also to provide concrete actionable steps and foster exchange among participants.

Accessibility as a Shared Responsibility

Global Accessibility Awareness Day makes it clear:

Digital accessibility is an ongoing process rather than a one-time project. Especially at universities, where digital teaching and learning resources are used daily, it is important to consider accessibility from the very beginning. Every improvement – no matter how small – contributes to making digital offerings more inclusive.

GAAD on May 21, 2026, is a great opportunity to engage with digital accessibility, evaluate existing offerings, and gain new insights.

Whether through participating in workshops or making small adjustments in one’s own daily work routine: every step counts on the path toward a more inclusive digital world.
