Every day we are exposed to background noise with a multitude of simultaneous noises from different origin, for example on the bus, at work, or at a party. Nevertheless, we can listen to specific sounds or voices out of this mixture due to our ability of auditory selective attention, which enables us to focus on relevant sound sources and block irrelevant background noise.

In order to investigate close to real-life scenarios, this study extended a virtual reality classroom scene and an established paradigm by various realistic noise conditions in order to investigate their influence on auditory selective attention switch. The influence of the realistic conditions was analyzed and compared with the influence of artificial noise.
