International Conference on Auditorium Acoustics 2023 in Athens
From September 28th to 30th, the Institute of Acoustics has held the 11th International Conference on Auditorium Acoustics at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in Athens, Greece. Jonas Heck and Josep Llorca-Bofí as well as our alumnus Ingo Witew presented their research in the field of concert halls and room acoustics:
- Jonas Heck, Josep Llorca-Bofí and Michael Vorländer: Concert Halls in Virtual Reality – From Audio-visual Perception to a Common Vocabulary
- Ingo Witew and Michael Vorländer: Measurements in room acoustics – How good are we at it?
On the first conference day, Jonas Heck and Josep Llorca-Bofí organized a round table to discuss the importance of descriptive vocabulary which can be used to depict the perception in concert halls. The poster „Concert Halls in Virtual Reality – From Audio-visual Perception to a Common Vocabulary“ was accompanied by a demonstration of a recent experiment in virtual reality. It was very well received by the delegates who selected it for the first poster prize.

Studienpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Akustik 2023 an Julia Seitz

DAGA 2023 Travel Grants
Die Gesellschaft für Technische Akustik (GfTA e.V.) möchte Studierende des IHTAs unterstützen an der kommenden Jahrestagung für Akustik (DAGA 2023) teilzunehmen. Diese findet vom 6. bis zum 9. März 2022 in Hamburg statt und bietet eine sehr gute Möglichkeit, erste Erfahrungen bei wissenschaftlichen Konferenzen zu sammeln.
Die GfTA fördert in diesem Jahr bis zu drei Studierende durch einen Reisezuschuss (Travel grant) in Höhe von jeweils 250€. Kandidat*innen müssen keinen wissenschaftlichen Beitrag bei der Konferenz einreichen, sollten aber zuvor noch keine DAGA-Konferenz besucht haben und an einer Lehrveranstaltung am IHTA teilgenommen haben.
Um Dich für den Travel grant zu bewerben, schreibe eine Email an Lukas Aspöck und erkläre in ein oder zwei Sätzen, warum Du motiviert bist an einer Akustik-Konferenz teilzunehmen. Die Deadline für Bewerbungen ist der 2.12.2022.
Inter-noise 2022 in Glasgow
This year’s inter-noise conference took place from August 21st to 24th in Glasgow, Scotland. More than 1000 delegates participated in this conference and presented interesting research in the field of acoustics and noise. Highlights of the conference included key note talks by Lily Wang (University of Nebraska–Lincoln) on indoor acoustic conditions and by the Salford Group (Andy Moorhouse, Andy Elliott and Josh Meggitt) on virtual acoustic prototypes.
Four researchers of the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics travelled to the conference and presented the following research papers:
- Eli Abi Raad: Experimental setup for laser vibrometry measurements of the vibrating horn in Ultrasonic Metal Welding
- Lukas Aspöck: Differences between measured and simulated room impulse responses
- Christian Dreier: Vehicle pass-by noise auralization in a virtual urban environment
- Lara Stürenburg: Acoustic Measurements and Psychoacoustic Analyses of Ventilation Diffusers

The interesting scientific program was accompanied by an entertaining social program as well as various early career events, which helped many of the younger participants to connect with each other. The International Institute of Noise Control Engineering (i-ince) also supported young researchers by providing travel grants, one of which was received by Elie Abi Raad. Congratulations, Elie, to this grant.

IHTA at the POSTER 2022 Conference
After a break of three years due to the pandemic, this year in May, the 26th International Student Conference on Electrical Engineering POSTER 2022 was held in Prague, Czech Republic. This annual event in Czech’s capital city is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students to gain first experiences at an international conference and strengthens the relationship between CTU Prague and RWTH Aachen University.
Three Phd students of the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics presented scientific work in Prague:
- Anne Heimes: Virtual reality environments for soundscape research
- Carolin Reimers: Investigating the Auditory Selective Attention Switch in Virtual Reality
- Lukas Vollmer: Evaluating Spatial Audio for Hearing Aid Applications
We are happy to report that the work by Anne Heimes was selected by a jury as the best paper in the category Informatics and Cybernetics. Congratulations to Anne for this award!

Early Career Presenter Award at the 182nd ASA Meeting
The 182nd Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) was held in Denver, Colorado, from 23- 27 May 2022. At the conference, our PhD student Simon Kersten was honored with the Early Career Presenter Award by the Computational Acoustics Technical Committee of the ASA for his presentation on “Influence of the Model Parameters for the Finite Element Simulation of Bone Conduction in the Human Head”.
In this work, the influence of the various material parameters that are to be determined for finite-element models of human heads in bone conduction research was illustrated using a simple ellipsoid model. This research is part of the CRC 1330 HAPPAA funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Rayleigh Medal for Prof. Michael Vorländer
The Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics is proud to announce that Prof. Michael Vorländer recently received the prestigious Rayleigh Medal, the highest award of the Institute of Acoustics. Congratulations!
The Rayleigh Medal is the Institute of Acoustics‘ premier award, awarded without regard to age to persons of undoubted renown for outstanding contributions to acoustics. The medal is named after John William Strutt, Third Baron Rayleigh (1842-1919), a very versatile physicist who conducted both experimental and theoretical research in virtually every branch of the subject. His book The Theory of Sound remains a landmark text in the development of acoustics.

By receiving this award, Michael joins a list of very well-known acousticians such as Manfred Schröder, Hugo Fastl, Leo Beranek and his his predecessor Heinrich Kuttruff, who have also been awarded this medal.
Young Professionals Grant at inter-noise 2021
From August 1st, 2021 until August 5th, 2021, the 50th International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering (inter-noise 2021) was held in online mode (originally it was planned to take place in Washington, DC).
Our PhD student Christian Dreier participated in this event and presented the paper Sound source modelling by nonnegative matrix factorisation for virtual reality applications. Related to this contribution, he was selected as a winner of the Young Professionals Grant Competition by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (I-INCE) – congratulations to Christian for this award!

New chairs for the EAA Young Acousticians Network (YAN) from IHTA
After many years of hard and fruitful work to maintain and to develop the products of European Acoustics Association, EAA Young Acousticians Network, YAN, Mathieu Gaborit is stepping back as the chair of the EAA YAN. In April this year, Elie Abi Raad has taken over the chair with Karin Loh as his co-chair. They will continue to evolve the community and presence of the YAN to provide an enriched network for young researchers within and beyond the European Acoustics Association (EAA).
We would like to thank Mathieu Gaborit and his team for the amazing work and congratulate Elie and Karin to their new challenges.
Award for family friendly leadership for Michael Vorländer
Michael Vorländer was honored the award for family friendly leadership „FAMOS 2020“!
He was nominated by his employees to honor the creation of a family friendly working atmosphere and his pragmatic solutions to urgent and every day problems.
Due to the pandemic the award ceremony was postponed to the 21st of june this year together with price winners from 2021.

Brigitte-Gilles-Preis 2020
Die Initiative „Die interaktive Erlebniswelt der Akustik für große und kleine Kinder“ erhält den Brigitte-Gilles-Preis 2020 in der externen Kategorie. Koordiniert und betreut wird die Initiative vom Lehrstuhl für Hörtechnik und Akustik (IHTA).
In insgesamt vier Kategorien verlieh die RWTH Aachen den mit bis zu 2.500 Euro dotierten Brigitte-Gilles-Preis 2020. Er honoriert Projekte, Initiativen und eine Abschlussarbeit, welche die Bedingungen für Studium, Lehre und Forschung von Frauen an der Hochschule verbessern. Somit tragen sie dazu bei, die Zahl von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Studentinnen in Studiengängen mit geringem Frauenanteil zu erhöhen. (zur Pressemeldung der RWTH Aachen University)

Die externe Kategorie würdigt Projekte, die das Interesse von Schülerinnen an Mathematik, Informatik, Naturwissenschaften und Technik – kurz MINT genannt – fördern. Die Auszeichnung erhielt in diesem Jahr die Initiative „Die interaktive Erlebniswelt der Akustik für große und kleine Kinder“. Hierbei wurden Konzepte entwickelt, die Mädchen zwischen drei und zwölf Jahren das spielerische und interaktive Erkunden und Erlernen des Hörens und der Akustik ermöglichen. Die Koordination und Betreuung erfolgt durch Karin Loh vom“ Lehrstuhl und Institut für Hörtechnik und Akustik “ und wird geleitet von Professorin Janina Fels. Das „female Network Melaten“ durfte den Brigitte-Gilles-Preis 2020 in der internen Kategorie entgegennehmen. Zudem wurde das Projekt „Hlumani – der Zukunft eine gerechte Chance geben“ mit einem Sonderpreis ausgezeichnet sowie Dr. Anna Stertz für ihre Abschlussarbeit.

Doctoral Award 2020 for Dr. Josep Llorca-Bofí
For his excellent PhD thesis, ITA’s postdoctoral researcher Dr. Josep Llorca-Bofí received the Special Doctoral Award 2020 given by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). The award was presented to him and 30 other doctoral degree holders in a virtual event on November 6th, 2020. In this edition the awards are given to doctoral degree holders who obtained a cum laude distinction for the defence of their thesis in the 2017-2018 academic year.
Josep’s thesis with the title
“The generative, analytic and instructional capacities of sound in architecture:
fundamentals, tools and evaluation of a design methodology“
connects the fields of architecture, acoustics and engineering and is published Open Access.

Auf der gestrigen Weihnachtsfeier des ITA wurde von der Gesellschaft für Technische Akustik e.V. (GfTA) je ein Preis für eine herausragende Bachelorarbeit und eine herausragende Masterarbeit vergeben. Die Preisträger sind dieses Jahr Johannes Imort und Lukas Vollmer. Wir sagen natürlich herzlichen Glückwunsch!
- Johannes Imort, Bachelorarbeit zum Thema „The Directional Energy Decay Curve in Reverberation Rooms / Die richtungsabhängige Nachhallkurve in Hallräumen“ im Lehrstuhl für Technische Akustik betreut durch Marco Berzborn.
- Lukas Vollmer, Masterarbeit zum Thema „Evaluierung räumlicher Lautsprecherwiedergabeverfahren für Anwendungen mit Hörgeräten / Evaluation of loudspeaker-based spatial audio reproduction methods for hearing aid applications“ im Lehr- und Forschungsgebiet für Medizinische Akustik betreut durch Florian Pausch und Michael Kohnen.

Die Journal Publikation, “Required Measurement Accuracy of Head Dimensions for Modeling the Interaural Time Difference,” von Ramona Bomhardt, Isabel C.
