In December 2021, the Potsdam-based non-profit health tech company Data4Life announced its cooperation with the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The metadata exchange platform MEx is the first initiative of the still young alliance. We would like to introduce you to the public health project as part of our series “RDM Projects in Germany”.
MEx makes research data findable
One problem in research is the difficulty of finding research data. This is because they are often distributed across different storage locations. In health research, the metadata exchange platform MEx is designed to solve this problem.
The platform provides a central overview of existing research activities at the RKI based on their metadata. This is structured information on the title, description and research area of the projects, but also technical information on the type of data collection, file formats and technical documentation.
The daily updated and transparent mapping of the metadata should facilitate the further use of the research data. With the help of the search function, users can specifically search for research projects and data in MEx. By cataloging the metadata, even sensitive research data that cannot be shared publicly becomes transparent and findable. This means that these data can then be specifically requested and used for cooperative research activities.
With this project, the RKI and Data4Life also want to take account of the federal government’s open data strategy. The transparency resulting from MEx is an important step in realizing the full potential of a constantly growing data pool, facilitating secondary research and promoting developments in the field of artificial intelligence.
Status Quo
The project is currently in the internal pilot phase. At the beginning of 2023, the MEx platform is to be introduced at the RKI. Later, the platform will also be publicly available for external researchers and other interested parties.
