At the end of the year, there is not only something new to announce from the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), but also reason to rejoice for RWTH Aachen University. After we reported on the funding recommendation of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in July, the final decision on the future funded consortia of the 3rd round was made last month.

RWTH’s Winning Streak Continues

The Joint Science Conference (GWK) has once again followed the DFG’s funding recommendation and decided on 4 November to fund eight more consortia:

  • FAIRagro – FAIR Data Infrastructure for Agrosystems Research (Agricultural Sciences).
  • NFDI4BIOIMAGE – National Research Data Infrastructure for Microscopy and Image Analysis (Life Sciences),
  • NFDI4Energy – National Research Data Infrastructure for Interdisciplinary Energy Systems Research (Engineering Sciences)
  • NFDI4Immuno – National Research Data Infrastructure for Immunology (Life Sciences)
  • NFDI4Memory – Consortium for Historical Humanities (Humanities),
  • NFDI4Objects – Research Data Infrastructure for the Material Legacies of Human History (Humanities)
  • NFDIxCS – National Research Data Infrastructure for and with Computer Science (Engineering and Computer Sciences)
  • Base4NFDI – Basic Services for the NFDI.

RWTH Aachen University is participating in the NFDI4Energy, NFDI4Objects, NFDIxCS and Base4NFDI consortia. This means that RWTH’s string of successes will continue after the conclusion of the third round of calls for proposals. Funding will start from March 2023. The NFDI was completed with the third round and the eight other consortia.

RWTH Participation in the NFDI

Overall, RWTH Aachen University is well positioned with regard to its participation in the NFDI. It is involved in ten of the 27 funded consortia as an applicant or co-applicant, and in five others as a participant. In this context, RWTH Aachen University is participating in the Base4NFDI consortium, which has a special role and wants to offer various services such as storage and computing services for all consortia. RWTH Aachen University’s involvement is strongest in the field of engineering sciences. Here it is involved in all five funded consortia. RWTH Aachen University is also strongly positioned in the natural sciences.

What happens next?

Now that the third round of calls for proposals has been decided and the funding has been completed, things remain exciting in the field of NFDI. According to the DFG, the goal for the coming years is to “consolidate and further develop the NFDI for the benefit of research and science together with all participants and to systematically network it with other, also European, research data management structures” (DFG). Three more rounds of funding for NFDI-wide basic services await us in the coming year.
