On June 12, 2024, the open meeting of the RDM network at RWTH Aachen University on the topic of “Publication – Open Access and Data Publication” took place online via Zoom again. After the last RDM network meeting, which took place as a face-to-face event at the University Library of RWTH Aachen University, the RDM team of RWTH Data Stewards invited doctoral students, postdocs and those interested in RDM to the virtual open meeting of the RDM.

Open Access and Data Publication

With four contributions this time on the topics of Open Access, data publication in general and data publication at the Institute of Technical Combustion (ITV) and in communication sciences, a lot of information was provided at the open meeting of the RDM network. For example, why sharing research data is so important and how data, code and analyses can be made publicly accessible via the the Open Science Foundation’s infrastructure.

Starting with a general introduction to the topic of Open Access, which is understood to mean free and public access to scientific publications on the Internet, questions such as “What models are there?” and “What licenses can be granted?” were answered directly in the virtual meeting. In the further course of the meeting, open questions such as “What is the difference to a data publication?” and “What are the possibilities of a data publication?” were addressed.

In the last part, two practical examples were presented – one from the field of combustion and one from communication science. The approaches of the disciplines to data publication could not be more different: on the one hand, they were reflected in large vs. small amounts of data and in differences in the review of data publication vs. the functionalities of data publication using the Open Science Framework. However, it was not only the differences between the disciplines that became clear, but also what can be learned from each other.

Summer Break and Upcoming Dates

The open meeting of the RDM network is now taking a summer break and will next take place on August 14, 2024 at 12 noon as a summer lunch (on a self-pay basis).

On September 11 and 12, 2024, the Data Stewardship goes Germany Workshop will take place as part of the open meeting of the RDM network. Registration will be open shortly.
