As part of its open science policy, the German VolkswagenStiftung supports the reuse of open research data and provides funding for this purpose in the context of “data reuse.”
The Aim of “Data Reuse”
With “Data Reuse,” the VolkswagenStiftung aims to support scientists in preparing their generated research data for reuse and making it available in suitable, publicly accessible repositories. This should help ensure that this data can be used for further research.
Who Can Apply?
Researchers who are currently funded by the VolkswagenStiftung or whose funding ended no more than six months ago and whose projects have generated relevant research data are eligible to apply.
What Is Funded?
Funding is available for the preparation and provision of research data in recognized, publicly accessible, and ideally certified repositories. The maximum funding amount is €100,000. To apply, applicants must specify the target repository and submit a data management plan.
What Criteria Are Important?
The following criteria will be taken into account when evaluating applications:
- Relevance of the data material for research: How significant are the data for the scientific community?
- Suitability of the target repository: Is the selected repository suitable for storing and making the specific data accessible?
- Quality of the data preparation concept: Does the concept meet scientific standards and take legal aspects into account?
- Feasibility of the concept: Is the proposed approach realistic and feasible?
How Does the Application Process Work?
Applications can be submitted at any time under the title of the main project with the addition “Data Reuse.” It is recommended to contact the foundation before submitting an application. The review is carried out by experts from the relevant scientific field and from the data and archiving sector.
