The first RDM Network Meeting in the new “Practical Special” format took place on May 22, 2025, in the University Library of RWTH Aachen University. The active RDM community at RWTH, comprising data stewards and other individuals involved in RDM, met in an informal setting to share insights on the latest challenges in Research Data Management, present project updates, and discuss recent developments at RWTH with the RDM team.
Practice Special: Focus On Current RDM Challenges and Personal Exchange
As reported in the April 1, 2025 blog post, the RDM network measures at RWTH were evaluated and realigned in Q1 2025 to make the network more effective and sustainable, and to better respond to the wishes of its participants.
The new meeting structure provides for four ‘Practice Specials’ throughout the year, two of which will be held in person. These events focus on personal exchange, concrete project examples, and providing an opportunity to learn from each other, discuss common challenges, and take away new ideas.
The first in-person ‘Practice Special’ involved short presentations from participants on their ongoing projects. These provided practical insights into their RDM tasks, presented initial results and raised current issues.
At the same time, participants showed great interest in each other’s projects and approaches. Based on the questions and discussions that arose, topics were identified that will be explored in greater depth in future meetings. These include, among others:
- Automating and integrating Coscine into everyday work
- Publication of research software
- Development and implementation of project-related RDM guidelines
- Using computational data and large language models in data analysis
During the subsequent joint lunch, participants had the opportunity to continue discussions from the networking meeting in an informal setting, as well as engaging in private conversations with each other.
At the same time, the meeting served to populate the ‘DataStewards@RWTH‘ project room on the RWTH intranet with additional content. This platform is intended to serve as the network’s central information and exchange point.
Participants were therefore asked in advance to prepare slides or add their content to the project room. These could also serve as a basis for the project presentation. Future meetings will then focus on providing updates to ensure the content in the project room remains current, allowing more time for topic-specific discussions during the meetings.
Save the Date for the Next RDM Network Meeting
At this meeting, we will address the request for a discussion on Coscine practice. This 90-minute online special topic session will focus entirely on the practical use of Coscine. Use cases will demonstrate how Coscine is employed in everyday research. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to share experiences of the challenges faced, solutions implemented, and lessons learned.
- Date: June 26, 2025, from 10 am to 11:30 am
- Location: Online
- Topic: Coscine Practice
- Registration: Zoom
You can find insights into the last special topic in our follow-up report. The special topics are aimed at data stewards, RDM active members, and anyone interested in RDM at RWTH.
