RDM in Small Research Projects

The question of the right research data management (RDM) arises above all for researchers who are still at the beginning of their careers, but also for students who are already taking on smaller research projects. Since they have had little to no contact with RDM to that point, it is unclear to many how research data can be made usable in the long term. Recommendations for RDM in smaller projects can now be found in a new handout by the German Data Forum (RatSWD), part of the Consortium for the Social, Behavioural, Educational and Economic Sciences (KonsortSWD). A set of slides for university teachers was also published together with the handout.

NFDI Talks: Coscine at the NFDI ToolTalk
In order to give researchers space and time for exchange and impulses, the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) organizes regular Talks in which experts from various disciplines present exciting topics in research data management (RDM) such as new services, use cases, and more. In the current ToolTalk, Coscine was the subject of the event!

At the beginning of March 2023, the funding of the consortia from the third round of calls for proposals has started. But Base4NFDI‘s work is already in full swing. The initiative supports and develops services that cannot be delivered NFDI-wide by individual consortia, but are needed by many. Applications for Base4NFDI funding – to initialize services, integrate services, and begin operations – will be available at least three times per year during the initial phase. The first round in 2023 is already in full swing.
Data Competence Center DKZ.2R – The IT Center Is Part of It
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the conception and subsequent establishment of data competence centers for science. Working with research data will continue to be a trend in the future, and for this the planned data competence centers are intended to provide relief for scientists by offering support and networking services. Together with Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University is involved in the conception phase of the data competence center “DKZ.2R”.

For this reason, the regular Open Meeting of the RDM Network took place this time on February 15, 2023 as part of Love Data Week online via Zoom and was not only aimed at the data stewards, RDM officers and RDM interested parties at RWTH Aachen University, but also at external parties. In the meeting, participants were able to learn and exchange information about two approaches to digital support in RDM. You can read this and more in our latest Love Data Week follow-up report.
