We Wanted to Know – the RWTHmoodle User Survey in Summer Semester 2019

December 16th, 2019 | by

As already in the pilot phase of RWTHmoodle, last semester we were once again in the hot seat: We wanted to know how our users actually think about the learning platform.

Online survey on user satisfaction

In order to gain this knowledge, we created a new online questionnaire in September 2019, which enabled our users to give their feedback anonymously. All persons who actively used at least one course room in RWTHmoodle in the summer semester 2019 – a total of 34677 persons – were invited to participate.

Therefore, the user survey in the summer semester 2019 was also the acid test for RWTHmoodle – how do the users rate the learning platform in the university-wide regular operation, in contrast to the relatively small number of users in the pilot phases?

High participation rates and positive results

We are very pleased that a total of 2416 users completed the questionnaire in full. And a look at the overall rating also gives us confidence: A majority of 62 percent of those surveyed gave us a grade of good to very good for the university-wide use of RWTHmoodle. At least 26 percent rated the learning platform all in all as satisfactory. RWTHmoodle’s average grade of 2.25 is slightly better among lecturers than among students (2.43). We are particularly pleased that the overall rating is slightly better than in the previous user survey and that we can therefore see a positive trend in respect of user satisfaction. Nevertheless, there is still some space for improvement and we are continuously working on making the learning platform and the support offering even better for our users.

The results of the user survey help us here: Especially the structure and the clarity of the course rooms, the users assigned us some homework, which we have already been able to partially implement. Among other things, the participants complained that although the new activities were displayed in the individual course rooms, there was a lack of a central cross-room view of all new activities. In the meantime, we were able to add this function to the dashboard.

Much of the clarity is also related to the design of the course rooms – and lecturers have a wide range of options. Accordingly, the lecturers also gave us feedback that they need detailed information on the functional spectrum of RWTHmoodle in order to be able to design the course rooms in a targeted manner. In order to meet this demand, we are currently revising and expanding our online documentation. The previous documentation with numerous instructions can still be found here.

In addition, basic and advanced training courses for lecturers are offered on an ongoing basis. You can view the offer and the registration options here.

More detailed results online

Do you want even more results from the current user survey? You can find a detailed list of the figures obtained and a description of our methodology on our homepage. In addition to the 2019 summer semester, you can also find the results of the previous pilot phases online here.

Even thought we plan to continue the user surveys continuously, you don’t have to wait for your feedback until the next survey. Suggestions for improvement and criticism of RWTHmoodle can be directed to the IT-ServiceDesk at any time: servicedesk@itc.rwth-aachen.de

We are happy to take them in to make RWTHmoodle better for everyone at the university.
