What was still hopeful last time became reality: After a digital company event in 2020, we were finally able to get together in person again this year. Despite the bad weather that had been announced, around 140 IT Center colleagues took part in the company trip. So much commitment was rewarded by the weather of Aachen – it improved hourly. The meeting point was at Kopernikusstraße 6 on October 21 at 9 am. Divided into eight groups, we took part in the following seven guided tours for one hour starting at 10 am:

  • Tunnel tours: Two tours of 10 people each were offered to visit the underground tunnels around Wendlingweg 10.
  • WZL Machine Hall: In a laboratory area of more than 2,000m², we were given insights into test stands, machines, and state-of-the-art technology.
  • Flywheel of Department 10: Equipped with hearing protection, we went to the infrastructure annex at Seffenter Weg. The flywheel can bridge short power interruptions with the help of its large mass until the diesel for the backup power supply is running. Among other things, this ensures the supply of power to our systems.
  • ERC: At the E.ON Energy Research Center, we were able to get an idea of ongoing projects focusing on networks and storage systems, buildings and areas, and heat and power stations.
  • IKA: Things got dynamic at the IKA. We were introduced to the driving simulator. We received information on mobility and vehicle concepts as well as on future control and monitoring concepts, the analysis of drivers’ behavior, and the evaluation of driver assistance systems / automated driving.
  • Fraunhofer Institute: During the tour of the machine halls of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT), the focus was on 5G. The 5G-Industry Campus Europe (ICE) is a research infrastructure for the validation of 5G. Among other things, research is conducted on wireless communication and automotive electronics.
  • Visual Computing Institute – Graphics, Geometry & Multimedia: Here we were introduced to 3D models and 3D printers. The main focus was on the many scientific aspects of generating, processing, analyzing, and displaying visual data.

Exploring Aachen

But the company trip didn’t end with the group tours. The first task was to come up with a team name, after which the teams set off in the direction of the Ponttor. There the starting signal was given for a city rally through Aachen. At the first stop of the route, real Öcher finger food was waiting for us as a snack – a delicious “Streuselbrötchen”. Afterwards, the rally was all about answering questions correctly, completing challenges, and taking pictures of the places we visited.

The performances of the individual groups at the city rally have already been evaluated and will be announced at the 2022 Christmas party. The award ceremony will also take place there.

A Culinary Finale

After all participants had covered an average of around 16,000 steps in bright sunshine, we rounded off the company trip among colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere as well as over a nice meal.

We went to the restaurant at the Elisenbrunnen in the city center. Here we had the choice between different dishes. The Aachener Sauerbraten with Printensoße was one of them. The feedback was positive throughout. Who would have thought that you could have so much fun in your own city?

We look forward to future company trips and events!
