TSM Backup “Read Only”

Attention!

As part of the backup transition 2022, a new platform for data backup and recovery has been built at RWTH Aachen University in the last months. Together with the manufacturers Hitachi Vantara and Commvault, the backup team of the IT Center has set up a new backup infrastructure, which in the future will not only provide the RWTH, but also other universities in NRW with the Datensicherung.nrw service.

In this context, we are gradually saying goodbye to the previous backup solution, the “TSM backup”.

As of January 17, 2023*, the TSM backup will only be available in “read only” mode.

The IBM storage infrastructure has been running in parallel with Commvault’s new backup solution for the past few weeks. Now that we have cleared the hurdles of a completely new infrastructure with the operational readiness of the new storage solution, TSM backup will be switched to “Read Only”.

As of Jan. 17, 2023*, it will therefore no longer be possible to back up systems via TSM. System backups will then only be possible via the Commvault infrastructure. Read access to backups saved in TSM will only be possible for a transition period.

We therefore ask all backup users to switch to the Commvault solution now at the latest in order to ensure seamless backup statuses.

The changeover is quite convenient and simple.

All necessary instructions and steps are available on IT Center Help. From getting started with Commvault, to installing clients and registering them, to running the server plan, our guides will help you make the switch to the new backup solution.

We are here for you!

If you need any further support, you will have the opportunity to discuss your questions with Commvault consultants during the Backup Consultation Day.

During the changeover, our mailing lists Backup-Info and Backup-Community will provide you with all the latest news about the new backup system as well as the opportunity to exchange information.

We have identified a number of facilities that have not yet migrated to the new backup platform (Commvault backup). These facilities have already been contacted in this regard. In addition, there are both operational and personnel reasons for postponing the “Read Only” mode to January 17, 2023.

“Die Umstellung gestaltet sich dabei recht bequem und einfach.”: Das klingt sehr positiv. Leider ist die Realität eine andere. Zum einen sind die Anleitungen nicht wirklich vollständig. Beispielsweise endet die “Installationsanleitung” für Windows mit dem Entpacken einer ZIP-Datei. Was man danach machen soll, wird nicht beschrieben… Zum anderen läuft bisher das Backup noch nicht wirklich rund.
