Welcome to the third post in our blog series about women in IT. In the first post, we looked at the challenges women face in the tech industry and how they successfully overcome them. The second post was dedicated to the success stories of historical and modern women who have made significant contributions to the IT field. Today we present the FEMTEC Career-Building Program, which prepares female STEM students at RWTH Aachen University for challenging careers in business and science.

What Is the FEMTEC Career-Building Program?

The FEMTEC program is an English-language support program aimed at female students in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (STEM). It supports participants, including female IT students at RWTH Aachen University, to prepare for management positions. The program is supported by a strong network of leading universities and renowned companies.

The scholarship holders take part in intensive workshops in Berlin and visit companies on field trips to gain valuable practical insights. In addition to professional development, participants benefit in particular from the opportunity to talk openly about their challenges and support each other in a safe space. FEMTEC scholarships are currently being awarded again. The application deadline is November 3, 2024. Interested female Master’s students can apply via this link.

Bianca Lenz: The Coordinator Behind the FEMTEC Program

Bianca Lenz is the dedicated coordinator of the FEMTEC Career-Building Program at RWTH Aachen University. She is passionate about helping female STEM students prepare for leading positions in business and science during their studies. In her role, she is not only responsible for organising the program, but also for providing participants with a space in which they can encourage, exchange and support each other. For Bianca Lenz, it is inspiring to see how the program strengthens the women in their personal and professional development and prepares them to tackle future challenges with self-confidence.

Support and Career Development for Women

In addition to FEMTEC, the Career Centre at RWTH Aachen University offers other events for female students. One example of this is the regular ‘Assessment Centre Training for Female Students’, which is led by Bianca Lenz. Here, participants learn how to present themselves successfully in assessment centers – an important skill in the application process.

In addition, the Career Centre, in collaboration with the Inclusion, Gender and Diversity Management (IGaD), organises the ‘Managerinnen berichten’ series, where experienced female managers are invited to talk about their careers and how they have dealt with hurdles. These events not only offer valuable insights, but also create role models who inspire female students on their own career paths.

Career Day for Women

For female students who want to further their careers, the next Career Day for Women will take place in January 2025 at RWTH Aachen University’s SuperC. At this event, at which 24 companies will be represented, participants will be able to network optimally and expand their career opportunities.
