In the second part of our Advent series, we take you into the world of Christmas puzzles with a touch of technology. In the midst of mulled wine, biscuits and candlelight, we invite you to put your grey matter to the test. Our collection of tricky questions combines festive cheer with exciting IT topics – perfect for enjoying the festive season with a playful twist. Why don’t you go back to our first Advent post and try out our recipes while you think about how to solve these puzzles?

Traditional Christmas riddles

We have put together a few wintry brainteasers for anyone who wants to try their hand at traditional puzzles:

I wear a white coat when it’s cold, but as soon as it gets warm, I disappear. What am I?
(Hint: I turn landscapes into winter fairy tales).

I only come round once a year, I bring joy, but you never hear me coming. Who am I?
(A classic for Christmas lovers!)

I have needles, but I’m not dangerous. What am I?
(An indispensable companion during the Christmas season).

Christmas Puzzles for Programming Fans

Christmas is not only a time for reflection, but also an opportunity to bridge the gap to the digital world. We have prepared some challenges for all IT enthusiasts:

What does a Christmas tree have in common with a server?
(Answer: Both have a base that provides stability).

Santa Claus uses a network of stars, numbers and lights to send his parcels. What could that be?
(Hint: think of connections).

If Santa Claus manages his presents with a database, what database schema would he use to store the children’s wishes?
(A touch of SQL for technology enthusiasts).

What could be the parallel between cookies on the web and biscuits at Christmas time?
(A sweet food for thought!)

Santa Claus has to deliver 10 presents, but can only deliver one present per minute. When the reindeer take a break, it takes him twice as long. How fast could he deliver with an improved cloud infrastructure?
(The answer combines IT innovation with Christmas magic).

Advent of Code – Puzzle Fun for Programmers

In addition to our festive puzzles, we have a special tradition at the IT Centre: Advent of Code, a programming challenge in the form of an Advent calendar. Every day, a virtual door opens, behind which a new, tricky task is hidden.

What makes the Advent of Code special?

  • You can solve the tasks using any programming language and improve your skills in the process.
  • The challenges range from simple problems to complex puzzles – perfect for beginners and pros alike.
  • A global and private leaderboard brings friendly competition to the game.

As a small reward, there is an ASCII snippet on the start page for each day solved, which results in an overall picture at the end of the month. The difficulty of the tasks increases from day to day, so it never gets boring!

If you want to take part, register on the website and join our leaderboard.

Have fun puzzling! Feel free to share your answers and your own puzzle ideas with us. We look forward to immersing ourselves in a puzzling and festive Advent season together with you.
