On the last Friday in July, the 25th, it’s that time again: System Administrator Appreciation Day reminds us how much we owe to the work of our admins and IT specialists. We at the IT Center would also like to use this day to say a huge thank you to our colleagues and all system admins. You ensure that our systems remain stable, secure and available around the clock – whether it’s the mail server, network technology, the server landscape or individual support requests. Nothing would be digital without you!
Who Are the System Administrators at the IT Center?
Our administrators look after a highly complex IT landscape that is constantly evolving. They not only ensure smooth operation, but also actively shape the further development of the server and network infrastructure. They are responsible for central services such as email, VPN, storage solutions and cloud services – all of which are essential components of our everyday digital working life. Topics such as IT security, monitoring and emergency management are also part of their remit. In their work, they are in close contact with other areas of the IT Center–from software development to user services – and thus make an indispensable contribution to RWTH Aachen University’s digital infrastructure.
New technologies, increasing requirements and individual user needs make system administration one of the most dynamic fields in IT.
Apprenticeship at the IT Center – Young Talent for the IT of Tomorrow
We are also particularly proud of our apprenticeship for IT specialists in system integration. Our trainees are not only familiarised with the technical basics, but also take on responsibility in real projects at an early stage.
The apprenticeship lasts three years and includes, among other things
- Setting up and supporting networks
- Installation and maintenance of IT systems
- IT security and data protection
- User support and error analysis
With in-depth training and a strong team spirit, we are training the next generation of system administrators–who will later ensure that everything runs smoothly when it counts.
Thank You, Admins!
Your work often remains in the background – but without you, literally nothing would work. Thank you for solving problems before they even arise. Thank you for having our digital backs every day. And thank you for keeping an overview even in critical situations.
Happy SysAdmin Day 2025!
