Learning with AI – How effective is it really?

AI systems are revolutionizing the way we absorb information and process knowledge. These technologies use machine learning to provide personalized learning experiences tailored to the needs of individual users.

But the key question is: How can AI be used in a way that truly improves learning and is not counterproductive?

 

Opportunities and Limitations

When used correctly, AI can significantly accelerate learning. Content can be explained, rephrased, or illustrated with examples in a short amount of time. Learners can repeat explanations as often as necessary until the content is truly understood, without any pressure or evaluation. This individualization enables a customized learning experience that is tailored to personal progress.

When used incorrectly, however, the opposite occurs: Those who use AI merely to copy solutions or do their homework automatically miss out on the actual learning effect. This is because learning requires active engagement and understanding. Without commitment to the learning process, understanding often remains superficial and fleeting. It is crucial to recognize that the use of AI is not synonymous with giving up independent thinking and problem solving.

 

The Role of AI in the Learning Process

The crucial point lies in the role of AI. It should act as a trainer and not serve as a substitute for independent thinking. The goal of learning is not to be entertained, but to be challenged. The use of artificial intelligence should aim to promote critical thinking, support independent learning, and enable creative problem solving.

The key here is not to copy solutions, but to actively engage with the learning material. This approach transforms passive consumption into an active learning process: learners are challenged and encouraged to delve deeper into the subject matter.

A key advantage of artificial intelligence is that it does not evaluate you. You can ask about a topic multiple times, get explanations in different variations, or test yourself without shame. This freedom makes it easier for many learners to work on their weaknesses without any pressure from teachers or fellow students.

The ability to interact anonymously with AI gives many learners back their confidence. They feel more secure experimenting with new ideas and concepts without fear of negative feedback.
