As of September 15, 2022, the new vaccines adapted to the Omicron subvariant (BA.1) are also available at the Vaccination Center at Uniklink RWTH Aachen. (Note: The new bivalent vaccine from BioNTech/Pfizer adapted to the Omikron sub-variant BA.4-5 will be available from September 29, 2022).
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the first Omicron variant-adapted vaccines on September 1, 2022. The BioNTech-Pfizer and Moderna bivalent COVID-19 vaccines provide protection against both the Omicron subvariant BA.1 and the original virus strain. Both vaccines can be used for booster vaccination only in persons twelve years of age and older. The regular vaccines used up to now are still administered for primary immunization.
The next vaccine adapted to the currently prevalent COVID-19 subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 may also become available in late September or early October.
Target groups are
- Individuals who have not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19
- Individuals who have already received primary immunization (but still need a first booster dose)
- Individuals who have received primary immunization and the first booster to date, provided you are at least 60 years of age or are in the group of individuals at increased risk for severe courses of COVI-19 due to an underlying condition. (The adapted formulation will be given as a second booster dose)
Please keep in mind that for booster vaccinations, at least 6 months must have passed since the last vaccination or infection with SARS-CoV-2.
