In an increasingly digitized research landscape, the establishment of trustworthy digital repositories is becoming increasingly important in order to promote sustainable and open science. This is precisely what the FIDELIS network is pursuing with the aim of establishing a Europe-wide network of these repositories.
Europe-wide Network of Trustworthy Research Data
The FIDELIS network is a project that aims to create a dynamic open science community in Europe. To this end, it seeks to strengthen and support digital research databases that are based on the FAIR principles: Research data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
Coscine Part of the Fidelis Network
FIDELIS is coordinated by the Finnish CSC (IT Center for Science) and comprises 24 partners from 12 European countries. The project is currently in its pilot phase and supports 58 research data repositories. In addition to the repositories, the Coscine research data management platform is also involved. Coscine was developed at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University and is available to researchers at DH.NRW universities.
Workshop on the Evaluation of Coscine Data
Coscine has joined the FIDELIS network in order to align itself with international standards. As a partner in the European context, FIDELIS is contributing to the implementation of these standards and to networking Coscine at the European level.
The project was launched with a two-month online workshop consisting of four sessions, including hands-on sessions. Within this framework, the extent to which research data in Coscine can be verified using automated tools was examined. This verification focused primarily on the implementation of FAIR principles in existing data.
The basis for this was FAIR EVA, a tool for evaluating, validating, and advising on the FAIR compliance of digital objects in repositories. A specially tailored plugin was developed for this purpose to evaluate the data in Coscine and assess it in terms of the FAIR principles. This plugin is intended to support Coscine in evaluating its research data.
By participating in the workshop, the Coscine team also contributed to the development of support processes within the FIDELIS network.
In addition to the IT Center at RWTH Aachen University, other European institutions also participated in the workshop, including the Slovenian Social Science Data Archives. Participation enabled a professional exchange on different metadata schemas and discipline-specific requirements for the FAIR evaluation of research data.
Outlook
The full integration of FAIR evaluation into Coscine currently requires resources that have not yet been made available. Nevertheless, the Coscine team is looking forward to the next steps in this exciting project and to working with FIDELIS to promote a sustainable open science community.
