In this article, we would like to reflect on our first Meeting of the RDM Network in the new year at RWTH Aachen University. It took place on January 15, 2025 and was entitled “Further development of the RDM network and an update of the central RDM services”.

New Year – New Opportunities

The new year 2025 also brings many new opportunities for the Aachen RDM Network. After our Data Steward Coordinator Daniela Hausen, who has been building and managing the RDM network since 2020, has left the RDM team and the RWTH, the RDM network will now be managed by Dr. Ute Trautwein-Bruns with the support of Stephan von der Ropp, both from the University Library (UB) of the RWTH.

We use this personnel change to evaluate our network activities after five years of existence of the RDM network with the feedback of the data stewards and RDM contributors, and we want to optimize our network activities with the ideas of the participants.

Survey and Science Speed Dating to Further Develop the RDM Network

Network activities currently include a DataStewards@RWTH mailing list, regular RDM network meetings and the DataStewards@RWTH project room on the intranet. At the annual kick-off meeting, the participants were asked to answer several questions, e,g, about the services offered by the mailing list or their general satisfaction with the organization of the RDM network.

The “science (speed-)dating” established during the meetings, which is mainly used to get to know each other and to exchange experiences, was also used to get new ideas and suggestions for the future design of the network.

For all members of the RDM network at RWTH Aachen University who unfortunately could not attend the network meeting, there will be the opportunity to provide feedback in an online survey. At the same time, interviews will be conducted with the data stewards about their individual needs, ideas and wishes regarding the network. All results will be used to further develop our RDM network. We will also report on this in the RDM blog in due course.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their ideas and opinions, which will play a crucial role in improving the RDM network and ensuring that it remains well positioned for the future.

Updates on the Central RDM Services

In the second part of the event, the RDM team and the service managers provided updates on the central RDM tools and services at RWTH. On the one hand, the new FDM guidelines at RWTH Aachen and their extensions, e.g. to the FAIR principles and the NFDI, were presented, and on the other hand, information on the current status of the RDM tools “RWTH Publications”, “RDMO”, “ELN@RWTH” and “Coscine” was exchanged at the RDM network meeting.

Love Data Week and Next RDM Network Meeting

From February 10 to 14, 2025, the annual Love Data Week (LDW) will take place under the motto “Whose Data Is It, Anyway”? The RDM initiatives in German-speaking countries have put together a diverse program for this event. Use this week to celebrate your love of data and to get exciting input from other universities about research data and research data management.

The RDM team is hosting two workshops on the RDM platform Coscine and an event on developing DMP templates with RDMO, titled “Developing DMP Templates with RDMO – the new editor’s guide” during the LDW.

In favor of this diverse program, we are foregoing the RDM network meeting in February. The presentation of the results of our network evaluation is planned for the March meeting.

For more information on the open FDM network meeting, please visit the event database of the RWTH University Library.
