The amount of data generated is growing rapidly, and is the need to efficiently manage, share, and preserve it for the long term. Effective Research Data Management (RDM) ensures that your research results are traceable and can be used by other scientists.
RDM is an integral part of good scientific practice and can have a significant impact on the success of your projects. To support you in this important area, RWTH Aachen University offers a flexible continuing education program in RDM.
Getting Started with RDM: Anytime with RDM I
Our blended learning concept combines self-learning opportunities in RWTHmoodle with interactive workshops so that you can expand your knowledge of research data as needed.
The Moodle course “Overview of Research Data Management (RDM I-online)” offers a time-independent introduction to the basics of RDM. Along the life cycle of research data, you will learn what research data management involves, what is expected of you in terms of good scientific practice, and what basic infrastructure is available at RWTH Aachen University to meet these requirements.
Advanced Learning with RDM II: Our Workshop Offers in the First Half of 2025
Based on the RWTHmoodle course RDM I, we offer advanced workshops (RDM II). The interactive workshops allow you to get to know the RDM tools through hands-on exercises and to reflect on the application of what you have learned in exchange with colleagues and the RDM team at RWTH.
All self-learning offers and upcoming workshops can be booked via the Staff Development Events Database. You will also find a detailed course description there. In the first half of 2025, we are offering the following RDM II workshops:
- Coscine-more than free quota! | February 10, 2025 | 1pm to 3pm (online)
- Metadata Basics and Creating Metadata Profiles for Coscine | February 14, 2025 | 10am to 12 noon (online)
- Management und Bearbeitung von Datenmanagementplänen mit RDMO | March 5, 2025 | 10am to 12 noon (online) (only in German)
- FDM II Kompakt-Workshop | April 3, 2025 | 9am to 5pm (in person) (only in German)
- Forschungsdatenmanagement in DFG-Anträgen – was Forschungsfördernde erwarten | May 7, 2025 | 10am to 12 noon (online) (only in German)
- FAIRe Daten durch Publikation | June 4, 2024 | 10am to 12 noon (online) (only in German)
- Versionskontrolle mit Git – das richtige Tool für meine Forschungsdaten? | 9am to 1pm (in person) (only in German)
Version Control with Git and GitLab
Another important part of our training is a Moodle course on version control with Git and GitLab. In the course “Introduction to version control with Git and GitLab” you will learn step by step how to install Git on your computer, set up your first project and execute basic commands. You will also get a first impression of working with the RWTH GitLab.
We also offer exciting courses like “Git Scavenger Hunt – a scavenger hunt with Git”, where you can deepen your knowledge of Git in a fun way, and “WordGuess – a collaborative game with Git and GitLab”, where the focus is on collaboration and project management. And if you prefer to learn about version control with Git in a workshop, you can join our RDM II module “Version Control with Git – the right tool for my research data?
