Coscine was also represented with a poster at this year’s Conference on Research Data Infrastructure (CoRDI). The poster showcased Coscine’s participation in the European FAIR-IMPACT Support program, which assists research data infrastructures in implementing the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). In this article, you will find all the information you need about Coscine and the FAIR-IMPACT Support program.

The FAIR-IMPACT Path

For seven months, the Coscine team participated in workshops together with fdm.nrw, conducted out self-assessments, and received personalized support from FAIR-IMPACT experts. This combination of self-analysis and expert feedback helped Coscine critically examine and develop its FAIR-enabling functions in a targeted manner. Exchanging ideas with other European data services, who shared their experiences and solutions within the program framework, was particularly valuable.

Pick & Mix

The poster was titled “A Pick & Mix Approach: Exchange of Best Practices among European Data Service Providers.” It used the image of a “pick & mix counter”: from a wide range of recommendations and best practices, the building blocks that suited the platform and its community were selected. The result was not a rigid concept, but rather a flexible approach enabling step-by-step improvements.

Coscine in the FAIR Spotlight

Developed at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University since 2018, Coscine offers researchers access to storage space, easy login via university account or ORCID, and central functions for collaborative work. In the FAIR IMPACT context, the focus was on three topics:

  • Trust and Transparency: A mission statement and a “deposit statement” clarify how FAIRness is implemented in Coscine
  • and which principles guide the platform.
  • Visibility and traceability: The plan is to use FDO visualization tools to display persistent identifiers (PIDs) and make metadata versioning visible in the user interface in the future.
  • Community and further development: Results from workshops and exchanges with other services were incorporated into Coscine’s strategic orientation.

The Team Behind the Poster

Ilona Lang (IT Center RWTH), Magdalene Cyra-Wolf (fdm.nrw), Sirieam Hunke (IT Center RWTH), Katja Jansen (IT Center RWTH), and Marius Politze (IT Center RWTH) developed the poster. Through their work, they demonstrated how FAIR-IMPACT has provided concrete impetus for the further development of Coscine.

Review and Outlook

CoRDI provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the results with the community and gather feedback. It became clear that achieving FAIRness is an ongoing process. The pick-and-mix approach showed that small steps can have a significant impact when geared toward researchers’ needs.
