“Into the data garden: Let your research flourish” was the motto of last week’s nationwide Research Data Day (RDD) in North Rhine-Westphalia. This year’s RDD took place on November 12, 2024 and offered researchers and those interested in RDM an attractive range of information on the topic of Research Data Management (RDM). The aim of the event is to present current developments and services in the field of RDM, to increase the visibility of the topic and to strengthen networking within the community.

Let your research flourish! On the second Tuesday in November, the fourth “Research Data Day” will take place in North Rhine-Westphalia – a state-wide day of action on research data management. On November 12, 2024, everything will revolve around a flourishing “data garden” in which Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University invite all researchers and those interested in RDM to Jülich for networking!

On November 12, 2024, Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and RWTH Aachen University will host the 4th Day of Research Data in NRW, a full-day event on research data management (RDM) and data science. The morning program will be organized by the state initiative fdm.nrw and broadcast as an online program (in German) in the lecture hall of the PGI. In the afternoon, the focus will be on regional networks under the motto “Successful research networks: growing together with data” (in English). Tools and services in the field of RDM and data science will be presented in interactive and practical sessions. Participants can explore two of the following topics in depth:
- De.KCD: Research Data Management in the Cloud
- DKZ.2R: Reducing data-related hurdles in research
- HDS-LEE: Data-intensive workflows in science
- HMC: Organizing software metadata with Somesy and FAIR Python Cookiecutter
The afternoon program ends with a poster session and an open exchange over drinks and pastries, where participants can network and present their own projects. Registration for the event is possible via this link.

Did you miss the Research Data Day 2023 in Aachen? Too bad! Around 80 RDM activists and RDM enthusiasts from Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich met on November 14, 2023 for a successful lecture and networking event. After we have already informed you about the morning program of the state-wide action day in NRW, we now report on the joint afternoon event of RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZ Jülich) “From Data to Diamonds – Empowering Research with AI and RDM”.

All good things come in threes! On November 14, 2023, the Research Data Day in NRW celebrated its third anniversary. Under this year’s motto “Promote and refine data: Bring your data treasure to light”, the state initiative for research data management fdm.nrw invited participants to a digital morning program full of fascinating presentations and lively discussions. One thing became clear: Raw data is the precious cornerstone of all research! Careful maintenance, processing and optimization can work wonders. In this way, simple rough diamonds are transformed into impressive treasures. In this follow-up report, you can find out how these rough diamonds are polished in numerous research institutions and which tools are used in the process.

The Program Is Fixed! TdF 2023 in Aachen

In our last article about the Research Data Day (TdF) 2023 in NRW, we informed you extensively about this day of action for research data management and launched a call for poster contributions for the joint afternoon program of RWTH and Forschungszentrum Jülich. The posters are an essential part of the networking event and will be presented after our diverse lecture program. Follow-up Report on the RDM Network Meeting in October 2023

On October 11, 2023, our open meeting of the RDM network for data stewards, RDM responsible persons and RDM interested persons of RWTH Aachen University took place again. The topic of the meeting was “Export Control and RDM”, presented by Mr. Nicolas Lunz as Export Control Officer of RWTH Aachen University.
