Are you already familiar with the homepage of Identity Management (IdM)? You can find all five IdM applications there at a glance:
- PasswordReset
- Selfservice
- ConnectMe
- Role Management
- Partner Manager
It’s quite convenient to remember only one link, isn’t it? The best thing to do is to add the link directly to your bookmarks. By the way: You can log in to all applications with the RWTH Single Sign-On.
In today’s article, we’ll tell you what’s behind IdM and the five applications that fall underneath it.
Identity Management at RWTH Aachen University
The Identity Management at RWTH Aachen University supports the entire lifecycle of personal data in the university’s IT-based services as a central personal administration.
Among others, the following aspects are covered:
- Registration of new users
- Change of roles within RWTH (e.g., from students to employees)
- Final departure and the associated discontinuation of rights
The main task of IdM is the provision of data for the authentication and authorization of persons as required.
By connecting central source systems (Registrar’s Office, Human Resources Department) to Identity Management, the data is stored at a central location and can be synchronized to connected systems.
Access data in Identity Management
To use Identity Management, each person receives an individual username (format: ab123456) and a password. The username is unchangeable and is sent to all groups of people using a coupon procedure.
When the first coupon code is redeemed, an initial password for RWTH Single Sign-On (Shibboleth) is generated. With this password you can log in to IdM Selfservice and the eduroam device manager among others. Please remember to change the initial password. Feel free to also have a look at the tutorial.
IdM applications with a click
On the IdM homepage you will find all IdM applications bundled and clearly arranged:
PasswordReset
If you have forgotten your username and/or your password for the RWTH Single Sign-On, you can retrieve both online via the IdM PasswordReset. To do this, however, you must have access to your contact e-mail address.
If you no longer have access to your contact e-mail address, you can use one of the other methods (pick up access data in person at the IT Service Desk, pick up new data by a third party with power of attorney, or access data by mail and in-house mail).
You can read everything about IdM PasswordReset in our documentation portal IT Center Help.
Selfservice
In IdM Selfservice you can view and partially change your Identity Management data on your own. To log in to IdM Selfservice you have to use your username (format: ab123456) and the corresponding password of your RWTH Single Sign-On account.
Learn more about IdM Selfservice in our documentation portal. Please also have a look at our video tutorial for the IdM Selfservice.
ConnectMe
You will receive – depending on your status – a coupon from the Registrar’s Office or the Human Resources Department, which will add you to a corresponding group of people when you redeem it in IdM ConnectMe.
A link key is stored in your record for data exchange with the system that issued the coupon. If you are already registered in Identity Management, i.e., you already have a username (e.g., ab123456), please always link the new coupons to this username.
You can read more about the coupon procedure in IT Center Help.
Role administration
The IdM Role and Group Administration allows RWTH organizational units to independently regulate responsibilities for online services, such as executing orders in the RWTH IT Procurement Portal.
IdM role and group management includes the steps “authorize” and “activate”:
Authorization is performed by role administrators of an organizational unit assigning roles to a person for the use of the offered services.
The authorized person redeems the coupon and thus becomes the role owner. The role owner can then log in to the online service using one of his or her own accounts (usually RWTH Single Sign-On) to perform the role.

Partner Manager
The RWTH Partner process provides limited access to RWTH IT services for individuals who cannot otherwise use them. To participate, you need to find a sponsor who will “vouch” for you.
If you are unsure whether this applies to you, you can find out more about the details of the RWTH partner procedure in IT Center Help.
Have you already used the IdM homepage? We are looking forward to your feedback!
