Finally, the time had come: After almost three years of work in the Datensicherung.nrw project, which started in the summer of 2020 under Corona conditions, the first “DaSi-Day” took place on June 30, 2023 as a face-to-face meeting in the imperial city Aachen at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University.

A complete success

The morning started with an inspiring talk by Prof. Thomas Abel from the German Sport University Cologne, who looked at the Datensicherung.nrw project from a remote IT perspective. Dr. Stefan Drees from the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia subsequently emphasized the relevance of the project for the cybersecurity of NRW universities in his presentation. In addition, there was still an overview of the processing status of the project.

Afterwards, a delicious lunch and an interesting poster exhibition provided ample opportunity to finally meet each other in person.

Many bilateral discussions could be held among each other as well as with the companies participating in the project, Commvault, Hansen&Gieraths, Hitachi Vantara, Huawei and Itiso (in alphabetical order), questions could be clarified, and further ideas could be discussed.

The Datensicherung.nrw project

In an increasingly digitalized world, where we create, exchange and store countless pieces of information every day, the topic of data backup is becoming more and more important. We all depend on our data, whether at work, in education or in our private lives. But this valuable information can be lost quickly, for example, due to technical failures, cyberattacks or even human error. The number of incidents in which companies and private individuals suffer data loss is increasing every year. An effective data protection strategy is therefore more important than ever before.

We at the IT Center are also intensively involved with the topic of data backup, and we are not alone in this. Against the background of the question of how large amounts of data from research and teaching can be backed up in the future, the Datensicherung.nrw project was launched. This project aims to establish a cross-university, state-wide, sustainable and up-to-date storage infrastructure. A total of 29 NRW universities, including RWTH Aachen University, are involved in this project.

More information about Datensicherung.nrw can be found on the project website.
