What does webhosting mean?
Webhosting refers to the provision of storage space (webspace) for the provision of websites. The people who create the website fill this webspace with different content, including images, videos, files, and fonts. Websites are similar to text documents that can be made available and accessed on the Internet. The content of the websites must be saved so that we can access them from anywhere at any time. However, this storage does not take place on a local computer, but on a high-performance server that is connected to the Internet around the clock. In this way, the created website remains continuously available online and the content can be accessed by users worldwide. RWTH Aachen University and FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences cooperate to provide webspace to institutes and student associations as webhosting providers.

How Does Webhosting Work?

Webhosting allows you to enter a domain name, for example www.beispiel.rwth-aachen.de , into your browser and have the corresponding website content displayed. To make this possible, the desired domain must first be registered, the webspace provided and filled with content. The domain name system (DNS) plays a crucial role by linking the domain name to the server. For this purpose, information is stored on name servers about the IP address under which a particular domain can be found. When you call up a URL, the domain name is converted into an IP address and the corresponding address is searched for on the Internet. If the search is successful, the corresponding website will be displayed.

What Does the Service Offer You?

The service includes the provision of a standard webspace with up to 2 GB. We support PHP applications, but you can also install a content management system such as WordPress yourself. We are also happy to provide a 2 GB database with every webspace on request. A database is an important component of websites as it enables large amounts of data to be managed effectively.

How Do I Order a Webspace?

To order a webspace from us, you must have the “Order IT” role. If you do not have this role, please contact the secretary’s office or the person with the “Administration roles” role at your institute.

The order is simply sent by e-mail to the IT Service Desk. The e-mail must contain the following information

  • Requested URL
  • Format: https://<name>.rwth-aachen.de
  • At least 2 contact persons
  • e-mail address
  • Telephone number
  • User name (from123456)
  • IKZ
  • Intended use
  • Contact group of the institute for the registration of the DNS entry

You are a student association and would like to order webspace?
Please note that your association must already be accredited at the RWTH. In addition, we also need the information listed above.

The Webhosting Portal

The webhosting portal is the hub for managing the webspace. Access to the webhosting portal is granted to the registered contact persons and the person with the role of IT ordering at the institute.

The webhosting portal offers a number of useful functions. In the “My URLs” tab, you can manage your webspace and, for example, request an alias, change the PHP version or add new contact persons. You can also request a database for the webspace, for example.

Automatic TLS Certificates

Of course, we attach great importance to security! For this reason, certificates from “Sectigo” are now automatically provided for the websites. When a website is ordered, it automatically receives a suitable certificate. The website and its subdomains and aliases are then automatically Transport Layer Security (TLS) encrypted. The certificates are updated automatically – so you don’t have to worry about anything.
