Together with the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), the IT Center is participating in the conception phase of the Data Competence Center for the Rhine-Ruhr region, DKZ.2R for short. 22 projects were selected by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from a total of 74 applications to participate in the conception phase.

Current Status

The first funding phase started on December 1, 2022 and ran until April 30, 2023. The 22 selected projects now had the opportunity to participate in the conception phase and design a concept for the development of a data competence center. Ten projects will then be identified to receive three years of funding, during which the development of the various data competence centers will take place. Whether the DKZ.2R will be realized thus remains to be seen with excitement.

What the DKZ.2R Is Intended to Achieve

With the DKZ.2R, the BMBF is planning an interdisciplinary data competence center for the Rhine-Ruhr region. The focus of the DKZ.2R is on the holistic promotion of methodological data competencies: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Research Data Management, High Performance Computing and Simulation. To this end, existing resources and competencies are to be bundled and support services for researchers are to be created. The goal is to minimize access barriers and to work on and with data.
