Open meeting of the RDM network during Love Data Week
The monthly open meeting of the RDM network at RWTH Aachen University will run virtually via Zoom this time on February 15, 2023 from 10 am to 12 pm as part of Love Data Week. RDM enthusiasts, RDM officers and data stewards can get to know two concepts at the meeting that – in keeping with the theme – offer “digital support in the RDM”.

a supplement to central ELN systems
Current solutions for RDM often focus on the development of central databases and solutions that collect, store and manage experiment-related data. However, the management of research data starts with the recording of information on local personal computers, and this information includes much more than those related to the direct experiments done.
The “RDM-desktop project” aims to provide a set of tools following the famous KISS principle (keep it simple, stupid) to support the management of project-related information in the local file system. The plan is to enable the exchange of files and the uploading and downloading of data at the discretion of the user. The big advantage is that existing workflows and data manipulation tools can be used and each local backup contributes to the institution-wide archive, spreading the storage and processing load.

RDM is important, no question about it. However, RDM always confronts researchers with challenges, especially if the processes and requirements of RDM are not yet known. In addition, many find it difficult to choose tools as well as to document where the data and metadata will ultimately be stored.
Jarves will address these issues with a guided RDM process that supports researchers in their RDM decisions and provides the knowledge they need in exactly the right place.
