To celebrate NRW Research Data Day (TdF) on November 18, 2025, we would like to give you a sneak preview of our “RDM Practice” and “RDM Services” arenas. These are worth venturing into on the action day for research data management (RDM). This article provides an overview of the contribution by Fabian Fink (RWTH Aachen University) entitled “All Chemists publish FAIR data.”

Take part in TdF, engage in dialogue with the contributors, and take advantage of the opportunity to network with other RDM enthusiasts!

Brief Description of the Initiative

The contribution “All Chemists publish FAIR data” is part of the National Research Data Infrastructure for Chemistry (NFDI4Chem) and includes a poster presentation and software demonstrations. These illustrate NFDI4Chem’s commitment to RDM.

In line with the vision that “all chemists publish FAIR data” (based on the FAIR principles – findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable), NFDI4Chem offers scientists practical tools, services, and training to improve their own data management and thus their research.

Contribution to Research Data Day

The contribution to TdF consists of a poster presentation entitled “All Chemists publish FAIR data” and accompanying software demonstrations of NFDI4Chem’s tools and services. The poster provides an overview of the work carried out within NFDI4Chem during the first funding period and also offers an outlook on developments in the second funding period, which began in October.

The poster is divided into four sections representing the central pillars of NFDI4Chem: the Smart Lab for data creation, repositories for data publication, metadata, semantics, and standards for data search and (re)use, and the cultural change promoted by supporting scientists in teaching and training.

The poster presentation will be accompanied by live demonstrations of the software and tools developed by NFDI4Chem. Practical solutions will be presented, such as the Chemotion electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) for handling data in the Smart Lab, the chemistry-specific repository RADAR4Chem for publications, the terminology and search service for finding and (re)using data, and the knowledge database with basic information on research data management. Visitors are welcome to experience the tools in action and try them out for themselves.

Reference to the Motto “FAIR Data – FAIR Play”

Digital tools alone already contribute to improving RDM in one’s own research. But it is only when they are used correctly in a team that their advantages become clearly visible. The article “All Chemists publish FAIR data” shows the interaction of various tools and services as ‘players’ in building a successful team for the creation, (re)use, and management of FAIR data in chemistry – in line with the motto: “FAIR data – FAIR play: It’s all a question of lineup.”
