What resources and support services are available to help early-career researchers advance their academic careers? At the RWTH Young Academics Day on September 4, 2026, doctoral students and postdocs had the opportunity to learn about various support programs offered by RWTH and to network with one another. The RDM team was also present at the event.
Organized by the RWTH Center for Young Academics, the event brought together early-career researchers from various departments at SuperC. In addition to providing information on the various opportunities offered by RWTH, the event offered, in particular, an opportunity for exchange and networking.
From the Chemistry Lab to the ELN – Follow-up Report of the RDM Network Lab Visit

What does research data management look like where research data are actually generated? On August 20, 2026, the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry opened its laboratories to the RDM Network and provided insights into research data management in practice. The focus was on Electronic Lab Notebooks (so called ELNs), and how they can be integrated into workflows in chemical research.

Experiment logs, measurement data, analyses, and notes are part of everyday research life. However, this information is often stored in various locations: in lab notebooks, on network drives, in email attachments, or on personal computers. This can make it difficult to retrieve data, trace workflows, or share information with colleagues.
Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) offer a digital solution to this problem. They enable structured documentation of research processes and help researchers make their work traceable, efficient, and accessible over the long term.
RDM Network Excursion to the Clavel Lab: Understanding Research Data Needs Up Close

On November 6, 2025 the RDM network visited the Clavel Lab to learn more about their research workflows and explore how a data steward can better support their data management needs. The visit offered a hands-on look at the lab’s instrumentation and the data challenges that come with it. A key focus of the exchange was the use of the electronic lab notebook (ELN) eLabJournal.

Research data is the foundation of modern science, and its careful documentation is crucial for traceability and reusability. However, traditional paper lab books have their limitations. Electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) offer a digital alternative that simplifies work processes and makes research data available in the long term.
In 2024, RWTH Aachen University launched a pilot phase with the open-source system eLabFTW. Now an important milestone is approaching: on October 1, 2025, the ELN@RWTH service will officially go into regular operation – a reason to celebrate!

In the ever-evolving landscape of research, documentation remains a cornerstone of scientific progress. Traditionally, researchers have relied on analog lab journals, but the shift towards digital solutions offers numerous advantages. Electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) not only enhance searchability, allowing easy retrieval of past experiments, but also ensure consistency through structured templates and metadata profiles.
