In December last year, we drew your attention to the RDM Toolbox 2024 with a Call for Participation. This took place from March 18 to 20, 2024 in the rooms of the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University in Kopernikusstraße.

The RDM Toolbox is a solution-oriented workshop format in which participants work together over several days on tools and their own research data management (RDM) solutions. They learn from and with each other and build up contacts and a network for exchange.

Participants and Topics

Fortunately, there was a great deal of interest in the RDM Toolbox: 50 participants from all over Germany attended, although the focus was naturally on NRW.

Many of the participants brought topics with them, which were then presented in the sessions and worked on and discussed together with the plenum. The level ranged from introductory and basic formats to coding sessions that went into detail. New functions and use cases of RDM tools such as eLabFTW, Coscine, Datalad and LiaScript were presented, tried out and discussed.

This resulted in a total of 12 different sessions with a total of 34 hours of content. A detailed overview of the individual sessions can be found on the website of the State Initiative for Research Data Management fdm.nrw.

Procedure

The start on Monday was characterized by a relaxed social program to get to know the guests. In addition to the welcome, there was the opportunity to visit the “AixCAVE” and the server room of the ITC’s High Performance Computing Center (HPC), which was taken up with great enthusiasm.

On Tuesday, the main part of the interactive working sessions took place, which were offered in parallel in four rooms at three different times. The guests were able to decide spontaneously which workshop they wanted to take part in, depending on their interests.

The RDM Toolbox concluded on Wednesday morning with an open question and answer session on the RWTH RDM service “Coscine“, which is also available to external cooperation partners of the RWTH, as well as an open discussion on the DKZ.2R.

Cooperation

The RDM Toolbox 2024 was organized by fdm.nrw in cooperation with the DKZ.2R and the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University.

Next year, the RDM Toolbox will once again take place at a university in North Rhine-Westphalia. The state initiative fdm.nrw will provide information about this on its website in good time.
