At the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University, we understand the importance of reliable and secure network connectivity for our students, lecturers, and employees. That’s why we are proud to offer eduroam, a global Wi-Fi service that provides access to the internet across campuses and in teaching and research institutions worldwide.

In this blog post, we will delve into the key features and benefits of eduroam, as well as provide you useful information.

Understanding eduroam

eduroam stands for “education roaming” and is a secure wireless network infrastructure designed for the academic and research community. It allows users to connect to the internet wirelessly, using their home institution’s credentials, while visiting other participating institutions. This means that as an RWTH member, you can enjoy internet connectivity not only on the RWTH campus but also while visiting other participating universities, research institutions, or educational institutions around the globe.

Benefits of eduroam

Network Connectivity
With eduroam, you can easily connect to the internet wherever your devices recognize the eduroam network. This eliminates the need to constantly search for and connect to different Wi-Fi networks when you move between institutions. Once you set up eduroam on your device, it will automatically connect to the network whenever it is available. Depending on which operating system you have on your device, different configurations are required, which we have summarized for you on IT Center Help.

Security
With the association to an eduroam Wi-Fi, a secure authentication of your user data is carried out with the home institution, in our case RWTH Aachen University. After successful authentication, your end device communicates with the local Wi-Fi infrastructure via an encrypted connection. This makes it impossible for your data to be intercepted and misused by attacks in the same Wi-Fi cell. On the local cable data network behind it, the local institution is responsible for secure transmission.

Global Coverage
eduroam is a global network, spanning over 100 countries and thousands of participating institutions. This extensive coverage allows you to stay connected to the internet wherever you go, whether it’s attending conferences, collaborating with researchers, or studying abroad. The convenience of accessing the internet using your RWTH credentials eliminates the need for guest accounts or separate registrations at each institution.

User-Friendly Setup
Setting up eduroam on your devices is straightforward and user-friendly. Our comprehensive documentation and video tutorials provide step-by-step instructions on configuring eduroam on various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. With a few simple steps, you can enjoy the benefits of eduroam on your devices and stay connected.
