We are celebrating the launch of the Rhine-Ruhr Center for Scientific Data Literacy (DKZ.2R)! The overarching goal of the Rhine-Ruhr Data Competence Center is to offer researchers a space to support their projects and build methodological expertise in data science, high performance computing (HPC), research data management (RDM) and machine learning.

Background Information

Last year, we reported in our blog on our involvement in the conception phase of DKZ.2R, which has now been successfully completed with the realization and official launch of the data competence center for RWTH Aachen University and the participation of the IT Center. A total of nine institutions and universities are involved in the DKZ.2R project:

  • Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (network coordination)
  • RWTH Aachen University
  • Aachen University of Applied Sciences
  • University of Cologne
  • Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn
  • Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences
  • the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems
  • University of Duisburg-Essen
  • Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

The DKZ.2R is one of eleven data competence centers in Germany funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project is headed by Professor Stefan Sandfeld from Forschungszentrum Jülich and Professor Matthias Müller from the IT Center at RWTH Aachen University.

What Researchers Can Expect From DKZ.2R

Researchers at all career levels in the Rhine-Ruhr region can look forward to a wide range of offers to improve their skills in dealing with research data, ranging from advisory services to scientific hackathons and data challenges to scientific consulting. The “Data Café” invites researchers to exchange ideas and work together on codes to strengthen data competence and develop robust solutions for complex challenges.

As an official partner of the FDM-Werkstatt 2024, the first event will take place soon with the support of DKZ.2R: The RDM Toolbench is a community workshop and will take place from March 18 to 20, 2024 at RWTH Aachen University in cooperation with the State Initiative for Research Data Management (fdm.nrw). Information on registration can be found on fdm.nrw. The registration deadline is February 26, 2024.
