My name is Daniel Malenkovic and I completed my training as a dialog marketing specialist at the IT Center at RWTH Aachen University. In this blog post, I talk about the training, my tasks and the highlights I was able to experience here – and hopefully I can motivate some of you to also consider such training.

The apprenticeship took place in the Service & Communication department. At the beginning, I was assigned to the IT Service Desk group until I moved to the Knowledge Management & Processes group in the second year of my apprenticeship.

During my apprenticeship, I was assigned to different teams depending on my strengths and inclinations. I was in the documentation team, the print service team and the coffee checkout team.

Tasks & Highlights

My main task during my apprenticeship was to process customer inquiries about the various services offered by the IT Center. I worked in telephone, e-mail, chat and personal support and was happy to be able to help our customers with their concerns in the best possible way. My preferred services for consulting and problem solving included the organizational and personal directory “RWTHcontacts”, the university WLAN “eduroam” & the cloud service of the NRW universities “Sciebo”.

My other tasks included creating and optimizing processes and updating internal and external documentation. I was also responsible for the billing of print jobs and the preparation of the coffee cash register statement.

In addition, every summer there were the communication training courses 1 & 2, which I held with my trainee colleague, in which we taught the new employees & trainees how to communicate with employees and customers and how to deal with conflicts.

My training highlight was the About IT module, which was held in 2022 and 2023. Together with my fellow trainee Yasin Kalem, my mentor Martin Pieters and the apprentice supervisors Miriam Petry, Katharina Röhrig and Nina Laakmann, we presented the IT Center, the “Dialogue Marketing Specialist” apprenticeship, the IT services and the high-performance computer at RWTH Aachen University to the prospective business people at RWTH Aachen. The module involved planning, preparing and carrying out presentations, weekly meetings and workshops.

Outlook After the Apprenticeship

As I liked the work and the whole team so much, I decided to stay with the department after passing my final exams and continue my career here at the IT Center.

After the takeover, the induction team was added to my previous teams. I now also take care of the processes, the organization of training courses and the induction of new employees. I run training courses on the individual services and am available to answer new employees’ questions and concerns.

I am looking forward to the tasks and challenges ahead and would like to take this opportunity to thank my trainee colleague Yasin Kalem and my trainee supervisors Miriam Petry, Katharina Röhrig and Nina Laakmann for their excellent cooperation.
