Open source software (OSS) has become a cornerstone of modern IT and plays a crucial role in the development of technology and software. Open source code enables innovation, flexibility and cost efficiency.

But what exactly is open source software and why is it so important?

 

 

What is Open Source Software?

Open source software refers to software whose source code is publicly accessible and can be freely used, modified and further developed by a community of developers. The foundations and philosophy of the principle are based on the basic idea of the free exchange of knowledge and ideas. Software, like ideas, can be shared freely without loss of value. By passing it on, it develops in a similar way to an evolutionary process. In contrast to proprietary software, whose source code is protected and can only be viewed and modified by the respective developers, open source software enables a transparent and collaborative development environment.

 

When Is Software Open Source Software?

For software to be considered open source software, it must fulfill certain criteria:

  • The program may be used without restrictions.
  • You are allowed to study how the program works and adapt it to your own needs. For this purpose, the source code of the software must be available in a readable and understandable form for humans.
  • Copies of the program may be passed on so that others can also use it.
  • The program may be improved and the improvements may be passed on.

 

The Importance of Open Source Software

  • Innovation and flexibility: By disclosing the source code, open source software enables faster innovation and adaptation to changing requirements. Developers can adapt the code and add new functions to meet individual needs.
  • Cost efficiency: Open source software is often available free of charge, which helps companies and organizations to reduce costs and use resources more efficiently. Using open source solutions reduces the need for expensive license fees while providing high quality and performance.
  • Transparency and security: The disclosure of the source code enables transparent review of the software by the community of developers. As a result, security vulnerabilities are identified and rectified more quickly, leading to a more secure IT infrastructure overall.
  • Promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing: Open source software promotes an open and collaborative approach to development in which developers can share their knowledge and learn from each other. This contributes to the further development of technologies and the solution of complex problems.
  • Community and support: Open source software is often supported by an active community of developers who provide help with questions and problems. This collaborative approach enables rapid troubleshooting and continuous improvement of the software.

 

The Security of Open Source Software

Open source software offers security due to its open nature. The community of developers monitors the source code, quickly recognizes problems and fixes them, as many eyes are watching. Security gaps can therefore be reported at an early stage, similar to an early warning system. Open source software is therefore rarely affected by viruses, as secure programming is a high priority. Nevertheless, we recommend that you do not blindly download programs from the Internet. Make sure they are genuine according to the provider’s instructions. It is better to obtain software from trustworthy repositories such as the Ubuntu Software Center, which performs automatic checks.
