At the beginning of the year “2025”, which is a special year, which is a special year in a mathematical sense, because 2025 is the square number of the sum of 1 to 9, we are pleased to announce the launch of the 125,000th RWTH e-mail account! In this article, we take a look at the development of RWTH e-mail accounts and RWTH-e-mail domains over the last 10 years.

Growth of RWTH-E-Mail Accounts Over Time

It has been about 10 years since we last reported on the development of active RWTH e-mail mailboxes. In the report from October 22, 2015, we exceeded the magical number of 100,000 e-mail mailboxes. Since then, about 25,000 e-mail mailboxes have been added to the central e-mail system. This means that the number of email accounts increases by around 2,500 email accounts per year. This can be observed particularly around the time of the respective start of the semester, which is between August and November.

And What About E-Mail Domains?

The development of e-mail domains at RWTH should not go unmentioned in this article either. Each institution at RWTH is entitled to apply for its own e-mail domain. The number of e-mail domains on the central mail system grows by about 20 per year.

The IT Center currently manages a total of 580 hosted e-mail domains on the central mail system. In contrast, there are 113 e-mail domains hosted on decentralized mail servers. The majority of the decentralized mail servers are located in the RWTH student dormitories.

With the introduction of the new role “Verwaltung RWTH-E-Mail-Routing” on January 30, 2025, the communication between the IT Center and the contact persons of the RWTH e-mail domains, to be defined in the future, should also be simplified and the organizations using the e-mail routing service should be able to act independently.

Your RWTH E-Mail Account for Life

Did you know that you can theoretically keep your personal RWTH e-mail address in the format “firstname.lastname@rwth-aachen.de” for life? In practice, you have to adhere to the lifecycle conditions for @rwth-aachen.de and @post.rwth-aachen.de email addresses. If you log in to your RWTH mailbox once every six months, you will be spared the email lifecycle process. Please always log in directly via the RWTH MailApp.
