Progressive digitalisation and flexible adaptation to new circumstances have significantly changed everyday working life, studies and research at RWTH Aachen University since spring 2020. Without the right tools, communication and collaboration between members of RWTH would have been much more limited in times of home office and distance learning.

The Introduction of Microsoft 365

On September 23, 2020, Microsoft 365 was introduced for all students at RWTH Aachen University. This enabled access to important Microsoft products such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as web applications for free use as part of their studies.

Two Groups, Two Tenants, One Microsoft 365 Offering

RWTH Aachen University differentiates between two groups for the use of the M365 offer: Employees and students. Depending on your affiliation to RWTH, you will either be granted access to the tenant for students, the tenant for employees or, in exceptional cases, to both tenants.

RWTH Aachen University students can access a wide range of applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, SharePoint and Microsoft Teams. These applications are available in both web and desktop versions.

Initially, students must first agree to the terms of use in Selfservice. They can then use the Microsoft 365 offering 24 hours after agreeing. Login is always via the domain ‘egal@students.rwth-aachen.de’ and not via the RWTH e-mail address.

The Office applications Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as OneNote are also available to employees, scholarship holders and members of Faculty 10 (FB10).

A Microsoft account is automatically created for employees as soon as the corresponding status is available in IdM. Login is via ‘egal@m365.rwth-aachen.de’.

Students who also work as employees at RWTH Aachen University, e.g. as a student assistant, can also use the M365 products via the employee tenant. The prerequisite for this is an active employee status in the system.
