SC 2023 in Denver: A Review

Source: Own illustration
Supercomputing (“SC”) is the largest international conference in the research field of high-performance computing. Here, researchers and industry partners from all over the world discuss current topics in high-performance computing. The conference takes place annually in the USA, this year under the motto “I Am HPC.” from 12 November to 17 November in Denver, Colorado. A total of 14,000 participants and 438 exhibitors gathered at SC 2023 this year. The HPC Group from the IT Centre was also there with six participants.
De Supinski: El Capitan – Exascale System

Recently, we had the honour of experiencing a remarkable talk by Bronis R. de Supinski, the CTO of Livermore Computing, who dove deep into the design and insights behind the NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration, part of the United States Department of Energy) Exascale System, El Capitan.
WestAI: The AI Center in Western Germany
Artificial intelligence (AI) is driving technological progress at an unprecedented speed, revolutionizing numerous industries and opening up enormous potential for the automation of intelligent tasks or the development of completely new products and services. While the introduction of AI is progressing rapidly in other parts of the world, Germany is still lagging far behind in both business and science, even though AI is considered a relevant topic by most. This is due to a lack of access to hardware resources and adequate services to support users, combined with a research gap in the development of scalable methods and systems.
targetDART: Advancing Dynamic Task Migration in High-Performance Computing

In the fast-paced world of high-performance computing (HPC), researchers and scientists are constantly seeking innovative solutions to enhance system performance and optimize resource utilization. One such endeavor is the targetDART project, a collaborative effort between the Technical University of Munich (TU Munich), the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), and several other academic, clinical, and industrial partners. With the aim of advancing dynamic task migration, targetDART is poised to push the boundaries of HPC capabilities.
H2M – More Control and Efficiency in Systems with Heterogeneous Memory

In the DFG-funded project “Heuristics for Heterogeneous Memory” (H2M), RWTH Aachen University and the French project partner Inria are jointly developing support for new memory technologies such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and Non-Volatile Memory (NVM). These technologies are increasingly used as additional memory in HPC systems alongside the common Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM). HBM offers higher bandwidth than classic DRAM but is also much smaller. NVM provides larger capacities but is slower compared to DRAM. The different characteristics and capacity limits thus raise the question of how systems with heterogeneous memory can be used efficiently and in which memory data should be stored.
Imagine Tomorrow: NHR4CES at ISC 2023
It’s been a pleasure being at ISC High Performance 2023 in Hamburg, Germany! This year, we and the other seven NHR centers were part of the NHR Alliance booth. The NHR Alliance was one of 158 exhibitors, with 147 exhibiting onsite. 3.015 participants attended this year’s ISC, setting a new post-pandemic record. ISC 2024 will be held May 12-17 in Hamburg, Germany.
In addition to the booth, we contributed tutorials, paper presentations and our so-called Sofa Talks. We established the Sofa Talks at ISC last year and continued these talks this year. We invited guests to discuss relevant topics with them in a relaxed, personal atmosphere in our Sofa Corner.
HPC Events – This was PPCES 2023
2023 – the year that promises a turnaround to normality again after Corona pandemic.
At least for us at the IT Center!
Indeed, the first events are already taking place again on site.
New software environment and operating system
for CLAIX

Maybe you have already noticed – the changeover to a new Linux distribution on the CLAIX has been going on for some time. Now it goes into the final phase, so that the old operating system CentOS 7 will be replaced by Rocky Linux 8.7. It is compatible with Red Hat Enterprise and brings a few changes.

This Was the Software Technology Fair 2023 in Aachen
Finally the software technology fair could take place again in presence in the rooms of the IT Center. The prospective mathematical-technical software developers (MATSE) of the dual course of studies “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science” of the University of Applied Sciences Aachen presented their project work in the SWT fair on the premises of the IT Center of the RWTH Aachen University on February 22, 2023. In the 3rd semester of the course, the fair and the presentation of the projects form the conclusion of the software engineering module for the dual trainees. Which projects were presented this year and what the MATSE trainees learned, you can read in this after report.
HPC Intro and PPCES 2023
From March 13 – March 17, 2023, we will continue the tradition and open our doors again for the Parallel Programming in Computational Engineering and Science seminar, PPCES for short, as well as the Introduction to High-Performance Computing 2023.
