The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the conception and subsequent establishment of data competence centers for science. Working with research data will continue to be a trend in the future, and for this the planned data competence centers are intended to provide relief for scientists by offering support and networking services. Together with Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University is involved in the conception phase of the data competence center “DKZ.2R”.

First funding phase of DKZ.2R started

The currently running first funding phase started on December 1, 2022 and will last until April 30, 2023. In this phase, 22 projects can submit conceptual designs for the development of a data competence center. The DKZ.2R data competence center application is led by Prof. Dr. Matthias Müller (IT Center, RWTH Aachen University) and by Prof. Dr. Stefan Sandfeld (IAS-9). Further partners of the DKZ.2R are the FH Aachen, the University of Cologne, the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University Bonn, the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, the Fraunhofer IAIS, the Ruhr-Univentrrsity Bochum and the University Duisburg-Essen. A total of ten projects will be funded for a period of three years. The data competence center “DKZ.2R” planned for the Rhine-Ruhr region, in which the IT Center and the FZJ are involved, is to have an interdisciplinary focus.

Specifically, DKZ.2R will focus on the holistic promotion of methodological data literacy (data science and artificial intelligence, research data management, high performance computing and simulation). In doing so, the measures will be tailored to the needs of researchers from the fields of life sciences, natural sciences and engineering, mathematics and computer science.

Background

The establishment of the data competence centers is part of the German government’s data strategy and the BMBF’s Research Data Action Plan. The latter aims at imparting data competencies, developing data-based innovations, and elaborating data sovereignty.
