On Friday, March 6, 2026, the annual Software Engineering Fair took place once again in the foyer of the IT Center on Kopernikusstraße. Between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m., the aspiring mathematical-technical software developers (MATSE) from the dual study program “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science” at Aachen University of Applied Sciences presented their project work.

The fair traditionally marks the conclusion of the Software Engineering module and offers trainees the opportunity to present the applications they developed during the semester to a broad audience.

The event was aimed at anyone interested in MATSE, including trainees from other cohorts, instructors, as well as high school students and teachers. In a relaxed atmosphere, visitors could learn about the various projects, ask questions, and engage in conversation with the development teams. Thus, the fair not only provided insights into the dual study program and specific development projects but also fostered exchange between students, companies, and university staff.

Insights into Current Projects

The projects presented this year again covered a broad spectrum of topics in software development. The focus was not only on technical implementation but also on the structured development process, from planning through implementation to the presentation of results. In addition to the technical outcomes, it also became clear how important teamwork, communication, and self-organization are in the development process.

Submission platform for competition entries and travel grants

The MATSE trainees at the IT Center worked on a project to develop a submission platform for competition entries and travel grants. The goal of the project was to support the Modeling and Simulation Science (MSS) program area with an expandable web platform through which competition entries can be submitted and subsequently reviewed.

Technically, the system was implemented as a web application. Particular emphasis was placed on a clearly structured interface between the frontend and backend, ensuring that changes to the data are immediately visible in the dashboard. Additionally, various role and permission models had to be implemented so that users could access only the functions intended for them.

Focus on Exchange and Presentation

During the fair, the teams were on hand at their project booths to demonstrate their applications and answer questions. Visitors were thus able to get a firsthand look at the developed prototypes and learn more about the technical challenges and proposed solutions. For the trainees, this offered a valuable opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from different perspectives.

Successful Completion of the Module

The 2026 Software Engineering Fair once again provided a dynamic platform to showcase the module’s results and offer insight into the MATSE dual study program. The presented projects impressively demonstrated the diversity of software development topics and how practical the training is designed to be.

We congratulate all participating MATSE trainees on their successful projects and thank all visitors for their interest and engagement. We are already looking forward to the next Software Engineering Fair and the new ideas that will be presented next year.
