In the fast-paced world of high-performance computing (HPC), researchers and scientists are constantly seeking innovative solutions to enhance system performance and optimize resource utilization. One such endeavor is the targetDART project, a collaborative effort between the Technical University of Munich (TU Munich), the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), and several other academic, clinical, and industrial partners. With the aim of advancing dynamic task migration, targetDART is poised to push the boundaries of HPC capabilities.

EE-HPC – Open Source Solution Approaches for Monitoring and System Settings

High-performance computing (HPC) is now one of the fundamental research methods in many scientific disciplines, for example in climate modeling, astrophysics and biology. In Germany, all computing centers consume about 3% of the national electricity. Therefore, even small energy savings in data centers lead to relevant CO2 savings.

Due to this, the funding guideline of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research “GreenHPC” pursues the goal of strengthening the innovative power in Germany as a business location by improving the energy efficiency in high-performance computing in research and also in commercial data centers.

The EE-HPC project is testing an approach to improve the energy efficiency of HPC systems through automatic, job-specific regulation of system parameters and settings.

#MeetMeWednesday: Our blog series “The IT Center Picture Puzzle” is drawing to a close, and to cap it all off, we have a particularly interesting interview in store for you. This time, the IT Center Management, Professor Müller and Mr. Bündgens, answer our questions. They talk about their daily tasks as well as about exciting projects and developments that will soon take place at the IT Center.

By the way, the key word we were looking for was “leadership”. Could you guess it? Find out more in this article.

In the DFG-funded project “Heuristics for Heterogeneous Memory” (H2M), RWTH Aachen University and the French project partner Inria are jointly developing support for new memory technologies such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and Non-Volatile Memory (NVM). These technologies are increasingly used as additional memory in HPC systems alongside the common Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM). HBM offers higher bandwidth than classic DRAM but is also much smaller. NVM provides larger capacities but is slower compared to DRAM. The different characteristics and capacity limits thus raise the question of how systems with heterogeneous memory can be used efficiently and in which memory data should be stored.

It’s been a pleasure being at ISC High Performance 2023 in Hamburg, Germany! This year, we and the other seven NHR centers were part of the NHR Alliance booth. The NHR Alliance was one of 158 exhibitors, with 147 exhibiting onsite. 3.015 participants attended this year’s ISC, setting a new post-pandemic record. ISC 2024 will be held May 12-17 in Hamburg, Germany.

In addition to the booth, we contributed tutorials, paper presentations and our so-called Sofa Talks. We established the Sofa Talks at ISC last year and continued these talks this year. We invited guests to discuss relevant topics with them in a relaxed, personal atmosphere in our Sofa Corner.

At least a little less than a dozen of Europe’s supercomputers were taken offline simultaneously in May 2020. Several university centres in Europe have been attacked by hackers and had to go offline. The unknown perpetrators hacked the accounts of the users in order to gain access to the supercomputers. Fortunately, our high-performance computer was not affected, but JURECA, JUWELS and JUDAC at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Hawk at the Stuttgart High Performance Computing Centre and the supercomputers at the Leibzig Computing Centre (LRZ), for example, fell victim to the attack.
