The IT Center Christmas Party 2023
The annual Christmas party took place at the IT Center again this year. This was celebrated on December 8, 2023 with the IT Center staff as well as alumni and family members. The party team
put on a fantastic celebration where nothing was missing. There was dancing, feasting, and toasting together.

IT-Zauber: Efficient Data Centres

The IT-Zauber project, funded by the BMBF as part of the nine joint research projects of the GreenHPC program, aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of data centres through digital twins. These digital images enable a holistic view of data centres by encompassing the entire operation including the computer load as well as the power supply and cooling infrastructure.
SC 2023 in Denver: A Review

Supercomputing (“SC”) is the largest international conference in the research field of high-performance computing. Here, researchers and industry partners from all over the world discuss current topics in high-performance computing. The conference takes place annually in the USA, this year under the motto “I Am HPC.” from 12 November to 17 November in Denver, Colorado. A total of 14,000 participants and 438 exhibitors gathered at SC 2023 this year. The HPC Group from the IT Centre was also there with six participants.
De Supinski: El Capitan – Exascale System

Recently, we had the honour of experiencing a remarkable talk by Bronis R. de Supinski, the CTO of Livermore Computing, who dove deep into the design and insights behind the NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration, part of the United States Department of Energy) Exascale System, El Capitan.

Best Trainee Award 2023

Despite the extraordinary circumstances during the coronavirus pandemic, the training was completed with the grade “very good” – four former IT Center trainees achieved this in 2023: Patrick Blaneck, who completed his training as a mathematical-technical software developer at the beginning of the year, Mia Möbes, IT specialist for system integration, Eva Tiede, Management Assistant for Office Management, and Marcel Vogler, mathematical-technical software developer. All four were honored by the IHK-Aachen for their excellent results at a ceremony.

Congratulations: Best Paper Award

On October 10, 2023, Dr. Tim Weißker and Dr. Daniel Zielasko won the Best Paper Award for their work entitled “Stay Vigilant: The Threat of a Replication Crisis in VR Locomotion Research” at the 29th ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology. The paper presents a meta-analysis of research on navigation techniques in virtual reality and analyses the associated empirical user studies with respect to their reproducibility. The results indicate a strong need for improvement within the research community, from which the authors derive specific guidelines for the conduct and presentation of future research.
#RWTHWelcomeWeek for the Winter Semester 23/24 – We Were There!

The IT Center was once again part of this year’s Welcome Week for the winter semester 2023/2024 at RWTH Aachen University! Especially international students have the opportunity to get acquainted with the services and processes of RWTH Aachen University.
Unlike previous events, this time there was no live digital lecture on our IT services. But don’t worry, there was still a video. The Welcome Week team changed the concept and adapted it to your wishes. In addition, we were live on site at the Freshers’ Fair in the Audimax on September 27, 2023, and were on hand to offer advice and support to new students.
In the following blog post, we will tell you about the Freshers’ Fair, the newly designed information video about our IT services, and also give you some help for a successful semester.
