4 Years of Network Renewal
A Look Back From a Coordinator’s Point of View

Was it really four years ago that our boss announced with beaming eyes that the application for network renewal had been approved?
Expanding the data network and WLAN, and switching to a new telephone system – in all RWTH buildings. It sounded too fantastic…and yet it came true.

Over the next few days, we stood together again and again in small groups and thought about how we could manage such a huge project. And shortly after that, I was sitting in meetings with the coordinator’s cap on my head, because all of our processes and procedures had to be discussed and adjusted. A huge jolt went through the entire department “Networks”, because everyone wanted to take on this challenge and try to get involved so that we could accomplish this enormous task.

Kick-Off: Federated Identity Management.nrw

On February 17, 2022, the consortium of the DH.NRW project Federated Identity Management.nrw (IDM.nrw) conducted the virtual, state-wide kick-off. The aim of the kick-off was to communicate the project goal and at the same time to arouse interest. Participants included experts from the field of identity management as well as interested colleagues from universities in NRW and other related institutions, such as participants from KDU.nrw and DH.NRW.

The Archive Migration – What has Happened so far…

The archive migration is an important step in the transition of long-term data storage at RWTH Aachen University. Whereas research data can be archived on the Coscine integration platform, the DigitalArchive provides long-term storage for data without a research context.

IDM.nrw – First Milestone in the Implementation Project

The project Federated Identity Management.nrw (IDM.nrw) aims to implement a federated Identity Management (FIDM). The federation of the local IDM systems of the institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia should enable users to access the services of various universities at any time and from anywhere with just one account.

The IT Center of RWTH Aachen University is in charge of pursuing this goal together with the consortium partners Ruhr University Bochum, University of Duisburg-Essen and Aachen University of Applied Sciences. Read the rest of this entry »

IT Center participation in the MyScore project

As the central IT facility of RWTH Aachen University, the IT Center is participating in the RWTH project Mobility System Cooperation in Higher Education, MyScore for short. The MyScore project, which started in 2019 and is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), aims to shape the digitalisation of international university cooperation and student mobility of tomorrow.

NHR4CES News – New project categories when applying for computing time

Since November 2020, the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University is a National High Performance Computing Center (NHR). Together with seven other funded computing centers in the NHR network, we offer scientists from all over Germany the opportunity to use computing resources and expertise for high-performance computing. RWTH Aachen University and TU Darmstadt have joined thematically to form the “National High Performance Computing Center for Computational Engineering Sciences” (NHR4CES), and thus cooperate in the context of NHR.

For years, RWTH Aachen University, like TU Darmstadt, has successfully operated high-performance computers of national importance – so-called Tier 2 computers. Parts of both systems have since been open to academic researchers from all over Germany. In this way, HPC is promoted nationwide and further funding is ensured.

Because of the alliance is now changing the way computing resources are requested and granted.
