Workshop of the State Initiatives for Federated Identity Management
On November 12 and 13, 2025, the biannual workshop of the state initiatives for federated identity management (IDM) took place at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University. This year’s meeting was organized by the staff of the IDM.nrw project, which supports universities in North Rhine-Westphalia on their way to a state-wide, federated identity management system.
Representatives from Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, as well as from the German National Research and Education Network (DFN), came to Aachen to exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and initiate joint developments.

IDM.nrw is a project of the Digital University NRW. The aim is to lighten the effort for universities to access and provide services to each other throughout NRW.

Are you already familiar with the homepage of Identity Management (IdM)? You can find all five IdM applications there at a glance:
- PasswordReset

- ConnectMe
- Role Management
It’s quite convenient to remember only one link, isn’t it? The best thing to do is to add the link directly to your bookmarks. By the way: You can log in to all applications with the RWTH Single Sign-On.
In today’s article, we’ll tell you what’s behind IdM and the five applications that fall underneath it.
ADAM – Active Directory Campaign
The “Managed Service Active Directory” service has been officially discontinued by the end of 2023.

There were several reasons for discontinuing this managed service. Among other things, the additional costs for the users, the high administrative maintenance effort and the insufficient scalability contributed to this decision.
Howevery, the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University already offers its facilities a far more advantageous alternative: the Active Directory for Workplace Management (ADAM for short).
After a three year project and pilot phase, during which the web interface and a security concept were designed, the managed service has now been introduced.

Finally, the time has come: The IdM Role and Group Management will shine in a new modern look from May 3, 2023, which you already know from the IdM HomePage, the IdM PasswordReset and the IdM Selfservice.

The IT Center Picture Puzzle: Service & Communication Department
#MeetMeWednesday: We continue with our series “The IT Center Picture Puzzle“. This time we have an exciting interview with the head of department Sarah Grzemski in store for you.
The word “communication” is synonymous with the Service & Communication (SeKo) department. The reason for this will be presented to you in the current blog post. Kick-Off: Federated Identity Management.nrw
On February 17, 2022, the consortium of the DH.NRW project Federated Identity Management.nrw (IDM.nrw) conducted the virtual, state-wide kick-off. The aim of the kick-off was to communicate the project goal and at the same time to arouse interest. Participants included experts from the field of identity management as well as interested colleagues from universities in NRW and other related institutions, such as participants from KDU.nrw and DH.NRW.
