In our “Nice to know” posts we provide useful tips about IT services at RWTH Aachen University. Did you ever wondered how to set up an e-mail client or what “role administration” actually is? Well, this series will provide you with answers to all your questions. In todays article, we will take a closer look at RWHT e-mail addresses.
E-mail addresses at RWTH Aachen University
Chances are that you will have to check the mailbox of your RWTH e-mail address on a daily basis. The IT Center of RWTH Aachen University provides a central e-mail infrastructure for the university using Exchange.
At RWTH Aachen University there are different types of e-mail accounts: the business e-mail account and the private e-mail account as well as the functional mailbox. The difference lies in the use as well as in the layout.
Business e-mail accounts and addresses use the form surname@institut.rwth-aachen.de and are used by employees of the RWTH for business purposes.
The business e-mail address is set up by the admins of the corresponding institutes. These admins are also in charge of the configuration of the institute’s e-mail address.
The private RWTH e-mail address has the form firstname.lastname@rwth-aachen.de. All students will automatically get such an e-mail address set up with their student enrollment as soon as the ConnectMe Coupon Code is redeemed. As a student you will need this e-mail address, for example, to be informed about all important information regarding exams and fees.
Employees can also have such a private e-mail account set up if they wish to have an e-mail address within the @rwth-aachen.de domain for e-mail correspondence with former fellow students for example.
Besides those two types of accounts, there are also so called functional accounts. Their function is easy to explain: functional e-mail addresses (e.g. Info@institute.rwth-aachen.de) are also maintained locally by the mail admins in the respective institutes. If such an e-mail address is used by more than one person, the owner of this address can add permissons for the other users. This is however only the case if this address is hosted on the central Exchange system of the IT Center.
Access and Passwords
When logging in using Outlook, the individual username (User-ID) including the domain (e.g. @rwth-aachen.de) is required (e.g. ab123456@rwth-aachen.de). It is not sufficient to enter the display name or only the user-ID. Thus, please make sure that you also enter the domain you want to access. For functional accounts, the user name consists of the e-mail address and a prefixed “fkt_”, i.e. in the form of fkt_info@institut.rwth-aachen.de. You can access your account using the password set in the IdM SelfService in the “Accounts and Passwords” tab for the corresponding RWTH Service account. If desired, incoming e-mails can be integrated into your e-mail client on any end device of your choice. IT Center Help offers quick and reliable instructions for a great number of different clients (example: Android 5.x – 7.x ). The same applies for the forwarding of incoming e-mails. You can add a redirection to the required e-mail address via the IdM SelfService by clicking on “Accounts and Passwords” and then on “RWTH Service”.
If you have any further questions regarding the RWTH e-mail address or other RWTH and IT Center services, make sure to check out IT Center Help. This page has recently replaced the documentation portal of the IT Center (doc.it) and is now even more intuitive. There will be a lot more to come in the near future. It’s worth taking a look!
