Ke: Distraction due to moving sources in short-term memory tasks
Dezember 13 @ 10:00 - 11:00
The irrelevant sound effect (ISE) is a popular topic in cognitive psychology, referring to the phenomenon where hearing sounds unrelated to a memory task disrupts recall during task performance. Research on the ISE can deepen understanding of the human brain’s information processing mechanisms, thereby making contributions to advancements in the medical field while also providing a foundation for optimizing educational and work environments. In this study, in order to further investigate the ISE, a verbal memory task and a spatial memory task were designed, with four different background noise conditions introduced (i.e., no noise, stationary noise, continuous motion noise, and discrete motion noise). The proportion of correct responses and response time were used as performance measures. The experimental results neither showed a significant effect of spatially changing background speech on spatial memory nor on verbal memory. This could be due to the limited sample size.
