Max Sick: Filter design for path-based auralization

Januar 30 @ 11:00 - 12:00

The balance between spectral resolution and physical accuracy is a central aspect for the design of real time path based auralization systems. The main problem is that reducing frequency resolution lowers processing costs but can significantly change the spectral representation of propagation effects. To investigate this, a systematic study of air attenuation, reflection and diffraction is performed. The changes are quantified by comparing spectral resolutions from 4097 bins down to 5 bins using an energy based error metric. The results indicate that air attenuation is stable at low frequency resolutions for typical urban distances, while impedance based reflections on absorptive materials and complex diffraction configurations require higher resolutions to keep accuracy. At the end, a resolution of 513 bins is found to provide a high level of physical accuracy and energetic consistency across most investigated propagation scenarios.
