We are fast approaching the turn of the year. Just before the corks pop, we would like to look back on an exciting and eventful 2022 and review the many changes, events and happenings in the field of Research Data Management. Before we face new challenges and changes in the new year… 🙂
What was in demand in 2022? Which articles were of interest to readers and which changes and events in the field of RDM shaped our year and created excitement? It can be stated that RDM remains highly popular, current and relevant this year. Research data Management is perhaps even more important than ever!
The RWTH Ship Remains on Course for the NFDI
In November 2022, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) included eight more consortia in the federal and state funding of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), including four with RWTH participation. With this third and final round of calls for proposals and the RWTH Aachen’s continuing string of successes, the RWTH ship remains on course for the NFDI and sets a firm anchor in the NFDI. The NFDI is now complete with the inclusion of the last consortia in the funding. The start of funding and the associated integration of the consortia into the NFDI structure will begin in March 2023. However, things will remain exciting next year when the three further rounds of funding for NFDI-wide basic services begin.
RDM Platform Coscine
A successful year for the Research Data Management platform Coscine is coming to an end. With the addition of new features, Coscine is constantly being developed and updated. Since this year, several new features have been added to make it easier for researchers to manage their research data. These include, for example, the integration of the Application Profile Generator from AIMS or the new RDS-WORM resources, which enable the storage of sensitive research data with protection requirements on the Research Data Storage (RDS) and prevent subsequent manipulation of the data. Another new and major change is the move of the generic documentation to mkdocs (open source licence BDS), as Coscine is being developed as an open source platform and thus the documentation will also be made available via open software. In order to keep researchers and interested parties up to date on all current developments and changes, the Coscine mailing list was launched this year. If you have not yet subscribed to it, now is the time to do so. 🙂 Interest in the platform continues to grow and more Coscine events are planned for the new year. So stay tuned for more!
Research Data Day in North Rhine-Westphalia
For the second time in a row, the North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW)-wide Research Data Day took place on November 15, 2022. This time, some universities also held events in the presence of the public. This year’s event was held under the motto “Lighthouse RDM: Orientation in the Sea of Data” and, as in the previous year, was divided into two programme parts: the joint NRW-wide morning programme and various afternoon programmes, which were organised by the participating universities themselves. RWTH Aachen University was represented with two digital presentations, “Coscine – FAIR in Data Sea” and “RDM Compass – the RWTH Ship on NFDI Course”. Three reports worth reading were also published on our RDM blog this year:
