New SSID – RWTH institutes – in the WLAN
RWTH Aachen University offers wireless data communication (via WLAN) to all WLAN enabled devices throughout the university. This WLAN service is offered by WLAN access points.
These access points broadcast one or more SSID’s, which the devices can connect with and thus get internet access. The term SSID stands for Service Set Identifier and is simply the name of a WLAN network. RWTH offers many SSID’s such as:
- eduroam for students, employees and guests of participating institutes
- RWTH-guests for quests without an eduroam identification
- RWTH-devices for IoT devices, e.g. measuring instruments and sensors

The IT Center Picture Puzzle: Department of Process Management and Digitalization Learning & Teaching
#MeetMeWednesday
With our last picture puzzle for this year, we introduce you to yet another department of the IT Center. On our social media channels, we called for guesswork and searched for a certain word to go with the four pictures, which stands for the department Process Management and Digitalization Learning & Teaching (PDSL). Well, which of you came up with the solution word “digitalization“? You can get more exciting insights into the PDSL department in the interview.
Protecting the Climate From Your Desk
At first glance, e-mail seems to be an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional letters: You don’t need paper and the letter doesn’t have to travel halfway around the world to the recipient by car, ship or plane. However, e-mails also cause greenhouse gas emissions in a completely different way – probably more than you think.
In today’s article, we explain why e-mails are also harmful to the environment to a certain extent. With our tips, we are sure you will be able to adopt a more ecological approach to digital communication and make a joint contribution to climate protection.
Blogging Day 2022
November 13, 2022 was the Day of Blogging. A blog is a great way to encourage exchange and interaction and, of course, to share information and news. It’s not for nothing that our blogs are part of our social media presence. In celebration of yesterday’s day, we prepared a few facts about our blogs:
The Story of the Bug
The download does not work? Probably a bug.
The lights of the WLAN router flash wildly in all possible colors? Could be a bug.
The software only throws error messages? A bug, for sure.
The term “bug” has long since crept into everyday life. Most people know it from working with electronic devices.
Company Trip 2022 – Finally In Person Again!
What was still hopeful last time became reality: After a digital company event in 2020, we were finally able to get together in person again this year. Despite the bad weather that had been announced, around 140 IT Center colleagues took part in the company trip. So much commitment was rewarded by the weather of Aachen – it improved hourly. The meeting point was at Kopernikusstraße 6 on October 21 at 9 am. Divided into eight groups, we took part in the following seven guided tours for one hour starting at 10 am: Read the rest of this entry »
