Extensions of RWTHonline

RWTHonline: The campus management system of RWTH supports the organization of studies and teaching. RWTHonline accompanies and helps you throughout the entire student life cycle, from application to graduation, and runs through many important processes with you. In addition to the more than 47,000 students, many of the RWTH’s 10,000 employees also use the system to organize their studies and teaching.

However, RWTHonline was not created at RWTH itself. It was not developed by RWTH Aachen University, but is based on a software solution developed at the Technical University of Graz. The instance running at RWTH Aachen is called RWTHonline.

Until now, the system could not be extended by ourselves, which meant that certain processes could not be tailored to RWTH Aachen University. There, one then had to be satisfied with makeshift solutions. This will now change!

For certain extensions to the system functionality, RWTH is now no longer dependent on the provider, but can implement these extensions itself in order to advance the digitization of workflows and processes at RWTH.

The old CAS Campus directory will be shut down on August 31, 2023. For many years it served RWTH Aachen University and the RWTH University Hospital as a web phone book. Until the introduction of RWTHonline, CAS CAMPUS was not just a web phonebook at the time, but a fully comprehensive CAMPUS management system for teaching at RWTH.

On the blog, we have provided comprehensive coverage of the project to replace CAS CAMPUS with its follow-up, RWTHcontacts, and have been keeping you up to date.

Since June 28, 2023, the web phone book of CAS CAMPUS is only available for reading and has been replaced by the new directory RWTHcontacts for the RWTH and UKAcontacts for the University Hospital. Read the rest of this entry »

H2M – More Control and Efficiency in Systems with Heterogeneous Memory

June 19th, 2023 | by

In the DFG-funded project “Heuristics for Heterogeneous Memory” (H2M), RWTH Aachen University and the French project partner Inria are jointly developing support for new memory technologies such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and Non-Volatile Memory (NVM). These technologies are increasingly used as additional memory in HPC systems alongside the common Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM). HBM offers higher bandwidth than classic DRAM but is also much smaller. NVM provides larger capacities but is slower compared to DRAM. The different characteristics and capacity limits thus raise the question of how systems with heterogeneous memory can be used efficiently and in which memory data should be stored.

It’s been a pleasure being at ISC High Performance 2023 in Hamburg, Germany! This year, we and the other seven NHR centers were part of the NHR Alliance booth. The NHR Alliance was one of 158 exhibitors, with 147 exhibiting onsite. 3.015 participants attended this year’s ISC, setting a new post-pandemic record. ISC 2024 will be held May 12-17 in Hamburg, Germany.

In addition to the booth, we contributed tutorials, paper presentations and our so-called Sofa Talks. We established the Sofa Talks at ISC last year and continued these talks this year. We invited guests to discuss relevant topics with them in a relaxed, personal atmosphere in our Sofa Corner.
