HPC Landing Page: High Performance Computing

High Performance Computing (HPC) at RWTH Aachen University acts as a central building block to support the simulation sciences by enabling the development of scalable algorithms and software. Of central importance for innovation in business and society, RWTH High Performance Computing offers various services and research opportunities based on a first-class infrastructure. This means that HPC applications can be executed efficiently and in a scalable manner and large amounts of data can be processed securely and quickly.

Implementation is supported by projects such as JARA, HPC.NRW and, in particular, the National High Performance Computing Center for Computational Engineering Science (NHR4CES). You can read more under the category HPCnews on our blog.

DSgG 2024 – Website online!

We kindly present: The website for this year’s workshop “Data Stewardship goes Germany”, DSgG for short, is online. There you will find everything you need to know about this year’s DSgG. The event will take place on September 11 and 12, 2024 at RWTH Aachen University and is aimed at data stewards, data experts, data curators, data managers, research software engineers and anyone interested in research data management (RDM). SocialHub :) PopUp Event 2024

How do we actually manage our social media channels? In order to have all channels at a glance and to efficiently optimize the online presence of the IT Center, we, the editorial team, use the tool SocialHub:).

So of course, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to attend this year’s pop-up event in Cologne. Invited guests included SocialHub customers who use the tool in their company as well as external guest speakers.

CodeClubMG Visit to the Chair of HPC

On April 23, 2024, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of dedicated CodeClubMG students to the Chair of High Performance Computing (Computer Science 12). The visit was organized by Tom Hilgers, Master student of Computer Science and part of the operational management of CodeClubMG. “With the excursion, we bring the students closer to the world of computer science. We were able to show them that computer science is not just about programming, but a very diverse subject area,” Tom tells us.

Community Meeting of Moodle.NRW

After the Moodle university meeting at the University of Leipzig in March, the competence centers ILIAS.nrw and Moodle.NRW jointly invited to a community meeting at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) on April 10. The meeting was aimed at all those involved in the use and development of the Moodle or ILIAS learning platforms at their university or other educational institutions. Colleagues from the “Service & Communication” department also accepted the invitation and are happy to report on the gathering here.

In addition to the opportunity to exchange ideas with other participants in personal discussions, a total of 16 sessions were held on various topics relating to the platforms and the design of digital teaching. RWTH Aachen University was also involved with a presentation. As in Leipzig, Harald Schnurbusch from the Center for Teaching and Learning Services (CLS) presented the Moodle plugin Exam Scan developed at RWTH.

Review of the SWT Fair 2024

On February 16, 2024, the IT Center opened its doors again for the Software Technology Fair, which is the highlight of the Software Technology module for the dual students of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science degree program. The prospective mathematical-technical software developers (MATSE) had the opportunity to proudly present their practical projects.

ENSIMA: One Year Towards Green Simulation

The three-year ENSIMA project (energy-efficient simulation methods for application-oriented computing problems), part of the BMBF’s “Energy-efficient HPS (Green HPC)” program, was launched almost a year ago. The aim of this project is to use AI methods to improve the selection of design parameters in production processes and to accelerate simulation processes through approximate and heterogeneous computing. IT-Zauber: Efficient Data Centres

The IT-Zauber project, funded by the BMBF as part of the nine joint research projects of the GreenHPC program, aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of data centres through digital twins. These digital images enable a holistic view of data centres by encompassing the entire operation including the computer load as well as the power supply and cooling infrastructure.

SC 2023 in Denver: A Review

Supercomputing (“SC”) is the largest international conference in the research field of high-performance computing. Here, researchers and industry partners from all over the world discuss current topics in high-performance computing. The conference takes place annually in the USA, this year under the motto “I Am HPC.” from 12 November to 17 November in Denver, Colorado. A total of 14,000 participants and 438 exhibitors came together this year. The HPC Group from the IT Centre was also there with six participants.
